86 power steering pump problems

When car is cold power steering works worse, and it doesnt work at all at the begining of a turn then all the sudden works fine. It also works better or with no problems at all when its at higher rpms. I have no leaks and the fluid is real dirty. My question is is my pump bad or rack or both?

"Survey Says:" your rack is worn. 'Classic symptoms of what is called "morning sickness". The rack piston rides in an aluminum bore. Eventually the bore wears. Rebuilt units are steel sleeved and won't wear out on you.

:iagree: However, you might consider flushing out your old fluid and replacing it with a good systhetic. The new fluid may work better for you. Here is a how to write-up.

True-True but if it works it will buy you very little time. Plan now to replace the rack in the near future. The good news is it is a job you can do yourself and will not break the bank. The "How-To" has been well documented here.
