Advice on garage hose reel

Now that the driving season up here in Upstate NY is over, garage improvements are front and center. I have a CH 20 gal. Serious duty compressor that needs a retractable hose reel. Anybody have some info/recommendations on which ones are best? 50ft. Spring loaded is basically what would suit my needs.

I bought one from Harbor Freight, I don't remember the price but it was cheap. I've had it about 15 years and it works great.

I have this one and it works great. Can be wall mounted or ceiling mounted.
Campbell Hausfeld Retractable Reel & HoseAutomatically rewinds hose
Mounting plate and bracket attaches to most flat surfaces for convenient storage
Guide arm is adjustable to 45° enabling easy use when mounted
Hose guide uses a 4-roller design to help reduce hose wear
50' hose included.

These can be found at Home depot, Walmart , etc.

I got a very solid one at Costco about 15 years ago. It was $18.99. It winds up manually with a handle, which was fine with me as I wanted to avoid the size and extra complexity of a self winding one. It has been working fine for a long time now.

It looks basically like this one at Harbor Freight.

bought one from NAPA store locally. One they sell for air hose and put a garden hose on it. It is spring loaded and has worked well with daily use since 1985. ( used in dog kennel so it definitely gets used and probably abused a little.)

My vote also. I like my hand crank version. Sometimes you end up fighting the self retracting ones.

That one looked good to me until I read the reviews...more than half of them said it was lousy, and gave one star out of five.

After continual replacement/repair of the "auto reel" type at my former employer, I decided on a manual reel type for my garage. It is, in fact, the Harbor Freight model shown above. Works great for the past 6 years. The only suggestion I would make, is to buy GOOD NAME BRAND air hose. Harbor Freight only warrantied their brand of hoses for 30 days and at about 45 days the hose developed "blisters". This happened twice and it was my expense. I then purchased a Goodyear air hose (from HF for about $4.00 more than their brand), and it has worked great without any problems.

Live and learn (because I always tell people HF is good to buy/use, ONLY when it is a disposable item....no matter what is is).

:iagree::iagree: I happened to find a Michelin air hose at Costco at the same time...got lucky as that air hose is still working fine after 15 years..

Graco. Problem is you won't find them retail. Right now they have a topline reel with 50' 1/2" hose reels for $180.00. If you don't want problems this is the air reel.

I have a similar one and it works great and probably won't break.

I mounted one of these

to a board and was able to slide the board under the pump on one similar to this:

Now where ever I take the compressor the hose is with it. It only takes a few seconds to coil the 50 ft. of hose and like has been mentioned less parts to break.

I went up to Tractor supply today at lunch to check out their hose reels. On sale was this one: Tekton 3/8 x 50' retractable

http://www.tractorsupply.com/special...-hose-3310323s

Seemed like a good deal and a quality product so I went for it. After installing this afternoon after work, I can say it fits the bill just perfectly. Thanks to all for their help. Now, just have find something else to occupy the winter. ARGH....

As a rule: The heavier they are the better. 1/4 hose is too small and 1/2 is overkill for most home garages. Later! Frank
