Difference between Z06 & ZR1

Hey everyone:

This comment came up on another forum and I'm a bit confused, is the ZR1 an upgraded version of a Z06 or totally different?

Please no flaming as that is not my intent, I just wanted some clarification and for the record I don't agree with the comment made, but understand that everyone is entitled to there own opinion but would like to comment in that thread. It was actually comparing it to the GT-R which I will admit is a nice car also.

"I'd rather have a Z06 or standard C6 with the performance packages instead of ZR-1 if I was to buy a Corvette, and I had enough money to afford the ZR-1. Also don't forget that the ZR-1's interior is absolutely terrible, especially the seats."

Well.....,aw forget it.

Short answer:different engine, brakes and suspension. Also a few cosmetic differences. Same interior.

DebRedZR1 12-17-2011 12:41 PM

ZR1. Zr- was the C4 version....=said poster in other forum is :crazy2: The ZR1 intereior isn't any different than the Z06 and this subject has been debated as much as the GS/Z06/Narrow Body/Coupe/Vert/Manual/Auto/Zaino/Rejex etc.:ack:

Go to the GM website and get the specs if you want to know the differences.

Had an 09 Z06 and now have a 2011 ZR1..save your cash there is no difference and no way it's worth the extra 50 grand. :leaving:

Of coarse I'm liein' but what does it matter, it's just what you wanted to hear...right.

I do miss my Z06 and will more than likly pick up another but the ZR1 is in my stable and here to stay.

Let's give the Op the benefit of the doubt --he might be a corvette C6 newbie or has just woke from a deep 5 year sleep. His profile shows he has a c2 that has been in a 20 year deep sleep.

Here is a little more detail on the difference :

1. Z06 = 7 liters (427 cubic inches) normally aspirated and 505Hp that gets you from Zero to 150mph in 17.3 seconds
ZR1 = 6.2 liters(Can't remember the Cubic inch displacment as its not a historic or memorable displacment) supercharged and 638hp that gets you from Zero to 150mph in 16.4 seconds
*Thats the biggest difference on paper(at least to me)

2. Other most notable difference.
Z06 = Steel rotors + no adjustable suspension
Zr1 = Ceramic rotors + adjustable suspension.

3. Insignificant differences
Z06 = no carbon fiber added appearance treatments and low profile hood.
Zr1 = Carbon fiber added appearance treatments and high profile hood with a see through portal.

*Zr1 costs on average 50k more than Z06 unless you get the Z06 with options 2 and 3 from above which is called z07 package for the zo6 Then the price difference is about 25-30k.
*Zr1 owners are on average older then z06 owners hence the need for option 3 above - More FIBER:lol:

Then there is the Grand Sport = 436hp with dual mode exhaust and 0-150mph in 23+ seconds -- btw the GS has a removable center roof panel and the Zr1 and Z06 do not.

Reading between the lines of the OP's post and his attitude, I would suggest he buy a gently used 2010 Grand Sport for 40-45k and slap a supercharger on it for another 12-15k . that would get him the best of both the Zr1 and z06 worlds. while this would not be as track worthy as a zr1 or z06, it would be perfectly acceptable for the street and especially with a well calibrated automatic he could embarrass the unsuspecting zr1/z06 owner on the occasional roll on or street light show down.

I figured as much but wanted to make an educated response somewhat more detailed then that.

I truly appreciate your response as that's exactly what I was looking for.

As for my history, I'm actually the original owner of the 75' which makes that a C3 and my son (also a forum member) just bought a C5 Z16.

Again, thanks Gizmo.

OP,

The Z-06 is a great car. I owned an '06 for almost 5 and half years. The ZR is an even greater machine. It gets there with a different engine, transmission, axle half shafts, suspension, brakes, additional carbon fiber, a few more heat exchangers (cuz of the supercharged engine), wheels, tires etc.

The performance increment b/n the Z-06 and the ZR1 is closer than the GS to the Z-06. There is not a "huge" spread b/n the two in the quarter, altho the ZR is quicker and faster with higher trap speeds. In the standing mile, the spread gets larger as the greater power, torque and different gearing manifest themselves (to the tune of around 12-14 mph at the mile). By the way, the ZR posts a higher standing mile speed than the Ferrari 458, and the GTR as well.

Thus the debate you find from time to time about whether the jump up to the ZR is "worth it". In fairness, said jump does involve a more than an insignificant amount of coin. That said, most folks that have made the move from Z to ZR are impressed with the performance gain and pleased with their decision. Whether that performance gain is "worth it" is of course subjective and dependent upon each buyers circumstances at the time.

Both cars are truly awesome. I have no remorse in my decision to get the ZR1 or the ZO6, and in fact, continue to own both cars. For the most part, the only people that will say that the ZR1 is not worth the extra money, are those who have never owned one. It is a different animal in the way that it makes power, rides, and to be a little indulgent...just is. Sure, you can mod a GS or ZO6 (or even a base C6 for that matter), and make a faster car, but it will never have the aura of the ZR1. That is not pretention...it's just a fact. It truly is GM's halo car and we are all glad that they made it.

Finally, a cogent argument to justify the ZR1, it's rich in fiber!

:iagree: all true, IMO.

(full disclosure: although I have not/do not own a Z06, I have driven both a ZO6 and ZR1, incl. both at SM...both cars do rock !)

:iagree: ...pretty much.

$25k+ price difference aside, the reason I chose the Z0 over the ZR had more to do with appearance than performance. Personally, I think the fully dressed Z06 is just a better looking car than the ZR1.

I don’t particularly care for the ZR dual-cove fenders or the window hood and specific to the Centennial Edition, I didn’t like the exposed carbon fiber against the Carbon Flash Metallic paint.

The benefit of the LS9’s added HP just wasn’t worth the price of admission for a car I wasn’t completely drawn into.

Life’s about choices…I’m completely happy with mine; no buyers remorse here.

No doubt, the ZR1 is an awesome machine…just wasn’t “all that” for me.

:iagree:

There is no denying the aura factor of the ZR!.
In addition to my ZR1, the parking lot at my work has 2 Z06s, an R8, a GTR, and innumerable 911s.
The ZR1 is always the center of attention when we get together on occasion.
There is something about a 638 HP Supercharged Corvette that demands respect and attention even among other expensive high performance automobiles.
