What engine noises are normal?

Have noticed a high pitched squeel, figure it is a pulley that may need a little oil. I remember my Z06 had a lot of value train noise. What other engine noises are normal in a ZR1?

A latent, subdued "whirring" from the supercharger is normal under some throttle. But definitely not a squeal. Squeal is definitely not a sound these cars make under the hood.

You might want to check your serpentine belt and/or your belt tensioner.

Does it do it under throttle only or all the time? If under throttle only, I would think your belt is slipping. If all the time, then perhaps you've got a bearing going out - alternator, pulley etc.

all the time, also some ticking at times. Probably all normal. I knew every odd sound a Z makes but just not familiar with the LS9 yet.

Is the squeal under throttle? Could be the blower with a smaller pulley or the rears tires screaming for mercy. If it's a high pitched belt squeal then you should take it in.

Sounds like you need to have a good vette tech look at it. What you got going on is not normal (the minor ticking may be; but not the squeal).

I think the squeal is the belt tensioner. I have it on occassion.

I think this is what it is. Can you oil the tensioner?

I seem to recall there is another thread on this topic. It has nevered bothered me much but i will have it looked at in the spring on my next service. If you do have it checked before i do , let me know the cause.

Are you referring to a high pitched squeal on idle when the car is warming up from a cold start? Mine does it and there have been other reports of it as well. Goes away after a couple minutes at idle, or pretty much as soon as you get it off idle. I think it's a pretty normal sound from the blower. There is at least one other recent thread on this topic.

Injectors tick some, hot or cold.

I would describe it as a high pitch chirping, and yes prevalent from cold start and then goes away.

Yeah, I think we're hearing the same thing. Never bothered me either. If you do bring it in for this, please post the findings. Belt tensioner sounds like a good guess.

same for me too, but i do get a small whine from the clutch area, you can hear it eminating from the shifter area.
when sitting still at a light and i put the clutch in, it produces a small whirl noise, release the pedal, it goes away. it goes away as it warms up for me too...but pops up again from time to time..

That almost certainly is a classic throw-out bearing sound. The bearing may be a little noisy/rough, but my suggestion is to see if it gets any worse before having it looked at/replaced.

It's not unusual for a clutch to sound differently in neutral with the clutch released versus engaged--you're putting side-load pressure on the bearing when you step on the clutch (that's its job). But if it gets noticiably noisier, the bearing may be on its way out.

1st time answering a forum question just wanted to pass on info on my problem. Took to dealer with squeeling supercharger noise and gas smell. Dealer found fuel rail leaking and excessive back lash. GM replaced supercharger with new one and wanted original sent back sealed untouched so they could check it out. Happened with 10k miles(2010). Ran fine when I got it back. They also replaced both cats a month ago. Said they were malfunctioning. Now just need to get rid of the squeeky brakes. Still love the car and love driving it.( had 2 zo6's b4 I got the zr1 and they were awesome too!) Hope this might somehow help.
