well it had to happen with my luck.....
 

i still havent figured out exactly how in the world this happened, but friday night i was driving home doing about 55, didn'y hit anything, or nuthin, and all of a sudden i heard a bang. so after i slow down and pull over this is what i see.... :eek:

had the insurance adjuster out Tuesday, and he appraised it at just under 7k in damage.... all from a stinking tire blow-out. o and they were Michelin run-craps.

Did the tread come off the casing? I have heard of that happening on a set of cheap Mastercraft truck tires but not Michelins.

the tread looked fine, they where on it when i got them so not sure about mileage, and yea the tread came of as one single piece.
i went back and found the tread the next morning. it came apart right at a little diagonal seam where i assume they put it together..?
yea other than my active handling going ape $h!1 and trying to drag me to the left no problems slowing down, i just coasted to a stop. Didnt wanna nail the brakes, not knowing what kind of traction i had :hide:

dude that isnt the tread :rofl: the tread came off.

I hope no tire ever see's pavement with what effectively is like fabric looking under the tread:thumbs:

Hay did you contact Michelin ? I've never seen a passenger car tire separate like that in 30 years. When I was a young man there were guys who cut new tread into already bald tires. Cheap ass dealers had it done so the car they were trying to sell had what looked like good tires even though they were junk and it wasn't long before the U.S. Government closed down all of these outlaw dangerous tires. lots of people got killed. Wow is all I can say, glad you weren't hurt. :yesnod:

Check the "born on" dates , stamped on the sides of the rest of your tires to include the airless one.:ack:

A lot of owners only see the outside edge of the rear tires and never really put eyeballs on the center of them, which is a BIG NO-NO. When I first bought my car and looked at the outside, I could see it had plenty of tread depth. Sadly, later that week I had the car up and ACTUALLY looked at them and saw steel belts in the center of the tires! Lucky I didn't have a blow out. Bought 2 rear tires immediately in the first 3 days of ownership! Better to be safe than sorry.......check your tires completely!

Happened to me on a '99 2500 4wd Suburban with Firestones (OEM) with about 15k miles on them. Tread separated about 3/4 of the way around the tire but stayed attached. Destroyed the RR of the truck like a big whip--was going 75mph+ on the Interstate when it happened. Chevrolet paid for the body damage and Firestone wrote me a check for 5 new Michelins that I went out and bought. They also took back the old tires and made me sign a release, but at the time they had real issues with their tires and tread separation. Reported them to NHTSA and threatened to sue. I'd call Michelin corporate and talk to them. If the tire was defective they may spring for the repairs. FWIW.

Well I can add another reason to my list to not like Michelins!

Looks like you might have run over something big and sharp - there's a cut in the sidewall, and those runflat sidewalls are tough. There seems to be more damage to the tire carcase than simple tread separation.

Just my thoughts.

The top pic also seems to show some wheel damage at the bead. Looks a lot like you hit something that pinched the tire completely on the wheel. In that event, I am sure the tire immediately began to de-construct.

Either way about it, I would at least contact Michelin and see what I could do. You are going to be out some serious jack here, so anything you can muster would be to your advantage.

I see claims for this a few times a year, normally its not as bad though, but normal cars aren't made of plastic and fiberglass.
