69-72 Windshield Washer Pump Rebuild for $30 w/Pics

I like repairing things instead of replacing them whenever possible.

Rather than spending $190 with the usual suspects for a new repro 5-port washer pump, with some direction from Alan71 :) , I was able to rebuild my original pump to as good or better than new.

I cobbled together parts from 2 rebuild kits for 3-port pumps that are cheap and readily available at NAPA (and elsewhere) and an assortment pack of O-rings from Home Depot.

Lastly, a new hose kit - and a good cleaning of the pick-up screen in the washer fluid bag (A/C car), and for the first time since I've owned this car, the windshield washer works!

Hi Mark,
I'm glad the wiper pump article helped!
It's fun to repair things we're not supposed to be able to repair!
Regards,
Alan

Sorry about the spit-bubbles in the pic with the tiny umbrella seals.

Couldn't think of anything that would work better at the time. :)

Hello,
I am also trying to rebuild my pump but I cannot get the piston to release from the shaft. I have turned it in all directions numerous times and also have been able to visually confirm that the keyhole in the piston is in the correct position but it still refuses to release. In the third photo is a "D" shaped piece just above the piston, what is that and where was is located?
Thanks,
Gene

That piece had broken off the top of the piston where the rod goes through the clip, and did not affect the operation when reassembled without it.

Help me.

I don't own a corvette but I own a chevy c10. How did you get that thing apart in your 3rd picture. I can't figure it out and mine is stuck somewhere inside there. It's the same piece I'm having a problem with and keeping me from getting my truck running again

Alan 71:

I know this is an old post, but I'm trying to repair my washer pump the same way; do you have the link for the wiper pump article you are referencing in this post?

Thanks!
