Z06 in rain question
 

I posted this question in general discussion and was advised to ask it in Z06 forum. I have a friend that I think is afraid of his Z. He is deathly afraid of driving in the rain. He says he can't control the car he has a 2008 Z with new rubber. I have seen him slow to 20 on the interstate because of a rain storm! We have a weekend trip planned and they are predicting rain, and needles to say he is scared. Is this an issue with the Z or is he being silly.

It's silly unless he's on old, bald rubber or racing slicks.

New rubber and an easy throttle = no problem...:thumbs:

If he is on proper tires he still needs to slow down a little. Wide tires are prone to hydroplaning due to the increased surface area. Just tell him to be careful and he will be fine.

He's a pussy and either needs to buy a fiat or go to a driving school.

I drive my car back from track days on stock sized Hoosier R6 tires, and sometimes get caught in rain. Luckily, I had the forsight to do some some light tread grooving, but far from rain tires. Got caught in one of worst rain storms of my life on these, to the point everybody was slowing down to 30 mph just to see at points. No hero here, just staying to right at 60 mph most of the way. Don't think you guys have anything to worry about on street rubber.

I actually towed a trailer (with motorcycle) in a snowstorm on 12" wide tires in an older corvette (400HP). Not the best idear in the world, but sometimes life throws you lemons.

Interestingly, an AWD SUV wrecked in front of me on the same interstate... going too fast for the conditions.

It's always smart to drive for the conditions and your vehicle, but IMHO the Z is perfectly fine for normal or wet conditions, you just have to drive responsibly.

That's it. I'm parking my Z in the garage and refuse to drive it at all.

I was at an HPDE at Spring Mountain a while back with rain and a wet track. Had a great time and learned a lot about the wet road performance of the Z06. I had half used NT05 and as long as there wasn't standing water I was find. For the areas with standing water, I found that I really needed to slow down (under 60) and be careful with the accelerator. No one likes the rain at an HDPE, but everyone that was there really had a blast and learned a lot.

It's not so much the car as it is the tires that determine how the car handles in the rain. When I was running the oem GYs, I had to be really careful as they tended to hydroplane fairly easily and I wouldn't drive over 50 mph in the rain. I now run General UHPs (which unfortunately are no longer available) and they made a huge difference - I no longer worry about driving in the rain.

I have driven in the rain and couldn't tell much difference from driving other cars in the rain. Easy on the throttle, easy on the lane changes and good throttle control in curves. Personally, I think some of the rain hype is somewhat overblown.

Nice grip on the wet road surface... Just don't blip (the gas) or whip (the wheel) and you'll be just fine. :thumbs:

I did a track day at Road Atlanta,and it was in the low 40's and lots of rain with Ps2 on my Z and I was doing triple digits down the back strait.I was pretty much taking it easy every where,but for normal street driving no problem at all.

I am still running on stock good years in my 2008 Z06. I just got back from a trip that went from Chicago, to Indianapolis, French Lick, Bowling Green, Evansville IN, Effingham IL and back to Chicago. We hit a ton of rain in Indiana and Illinois - and I hydroplaned at about 75 MPh - but I made it no problem. Yes, driving in the rain sucks, and its prompting me to get new tires, but it was not really bad either.
