Vette motors, shut down cylinders?

I've had more than one person tell me that C6 motors will shut down
cylinders when cruising on the super-slab, to save gas.
Remember hearing this about other cars, but never read anything about
this on the corvette motors?
So I'll ask the experts. :lurk:

While it was looked at with the introduction of the LS3 in model year 2008 it was NOT implemented. It resulted in driveline vibration issues with the front engine, rear transmission configuration.

The Corvette does not employ cylinder deactivation, displacement on demand or any other mode of deactivation. You get all eight all the time.

Good, now I can tell them they're FOS. LOL

They may be confused because variants of the Corvette LS3 motor have the capability and it is employed in other GM models that use it (The L99 in the SS Camaro for example).

As others have said, the Vette LS3 is FULL 8 cyclinders. The Camaro SS (L99) which is the auto, drops you down to 4 cylinders. It's called "AFM" or active fuel management.

This idea might even work well in the airline industry too >

Enjoy your flight

Hell shut 'em all down and glide-in. It used to work for the Space Shuttle (well, back in the days when America could put a man in space).

I hope it stays that way with the C7:rock:

You are my new hero :) "all eight all the time" (in several hundred random incarnations) can't wait to turn that into a t-shirt :D and maybe a new plate

If you want that displacement on demand DOD the Dodge Challenger SRT-8 with automatic transmission has that feature.

No thanks..

And "in before warranty thread scope creep."

JKbride 06-07-2012 02:20 PM

Our Monte Carlo SS with the 5.3l LS4 V8 has displacement on demand and goes from 8 to 4. It basically shuts off power to 4 of the fuel injectors. You cant tell the diff other than the sound of the engine changes.

This would be a nice option for the Vette only if you could turn it off or on...like you have with MSRC.
