Motor Oil Choices

Does anyone have an idea on how many quarts of oil my '70 350/350 use? I just recently purchased the car and this will be my first oil change on it. Also, would you recommend synthetic over "normal" oil?

Thanks.

I used to be a Havolin fan, but now use Valvoline exclusively.

Buy seven -- use five -- and check. Add sixth as needed. Drink the seventh.

I am with Chris, well to a degree anyway. Like the Valvoline in the engine, stay away from the synthetic with your original engine.

Synthetic is fine for modern engines. But put "dino" oil in your "dinosaur" engine!

I use Valvoline, unless Castrol is cheaper when I buy oil. Usually 6 quarts will do it, including filling the filter.

I prefer using conventional oils, because they contain cleaning agents to clean the engine. Synthetic oils do not cleanse, unless technology has recently changed. The idea is that synthetic oils stay clean within the engine, therefore no cleaning agents are needed. With older engines that have sludge build-up, among other things, I think conventional oils are the best to control such factors. Just my opinion!

hhhmmm...dino oil huh? ive been using nothing but mobil1 in my cars for the last few yrs but they have all been late models...
i just did my 1st oil change recently in my 79 and i used mobil1 again...
im wondering about this issue and im sure there is as many opinions on "fossil oil" vs. synthetic as people that you ask...
im curious how many of you think that old fashioned oil is best for our old fashioned engines and how many think that synthetic is just fine or even better.............hhhmmmm???
after all...our oil is the lifeblood of our engines and i for one want to use nothing but the best in mine...........

any good oil with SJ or better grade will do, 10-30w seems to be best for me, I use castrol, valvoline, or quaker state.

What wt. do you all use? I use 10W40, but was kind of wondering if something like 20W50 would be better for the HOT months of July and August. What do you think???

I run with Valvoline Racing 20 50 mineraloil...Never use synthetic oil in a old engine.

The only drawback with synthetic in an old engine is that it will leak easier than regular oil. If it leaks, then replace your gaskets.

thanx...joeveto said in that thread, and i quote "But what they say about high mileage engines and synthetic is true. My engine didn't leak. I threw synthetic in, and bam, it leaked and smoked. I switched back to organic, and everything stopped. No smoke no leaks."

same exact thing happened to me! no leaks...changed the oil for the first time and it imediatly started leaking...thought it was a front seal (still might be)
so...what i am going to do BEFORE i get into a seal change is...
change my oil again using dino oil...clean up the mess and check my fuel pump bolts...and see what happens...if it works...fine...if it dosnt, i havent lost or spent much...
