Best way to launch a stalled A4

I'm just curious to hear others thoughts on this.....

Seems to be 2 schools of thought on this subject.

Either you stage and floor it and the converter do it's thing, of you stage, flash the converter as far as you can and then floor it.

I've heard claims that Yank recommends flashing the converter, what say the general population?

Mine gets a better 60' with some footbrake. First you find what RPM you can reach before the brakes won't hold. Then stage the RPM a little under that, so you don't accidentally roll out of stage and redlight. For me, 2000-2500 works best.

That's what I figured as well.....think I might have gone a bit overboard with the RPMs. Guess I'll try a few different launch RPMs to see what works best for my 3200 stall.

Depends on the converter, right?
I have found that you want to stall it below where the car is trying to move forward hard.
Figure out where that is and then drop 500 rpm or so.
But basically you have to experiment.
You for sure don't want the car trying to lift the front before launch.
If the car hooks good, you aren't going to find a bunch of ET either way. Less than a tenth.

I'll be on my DR's for the first time this evening........

Good Luck, and be sure to pass along the results!

Ditto on that. :lurk: Yes it depends on the converter. With my 3200 stall it would move around 2300rpm, so 2K was pretty safe. Now with a 3600 stall it starts to move about 2700rpm, so I might stage with 2500rpm.

My 3400 launches best from idle. You have to see which method works for your setup.

Is that with your truck?

The weather sucked today 93% humidity and DA was about 3,200 ft

great job.......anything else go as planned today ??

instant mph :bigears ??

Thanks..........

N20 worked ... 93% humidity, 3200da ran some 10.33 . . . breaking up in 3rd I think I was running out of fuel ... overall, I'm very happy with today's results cause I was running too fast for the 10.50 index then the rain came and washed it all away! :D

Got my ticket stamped so the next race is on them!

MPH was low (129) from breaking up - up top!

Well congrats....best thing is, your out enjoying your car.... Did the plugs reflect your diagnosis ??

"I personally, have NEVER burned up anything by being too lean.

You know, we talk about this all the time and make comparisons, but it is pretty much accepted, that a nitrous engine, is still a N/A engine and you tune it as such. So if you were running down the track on motor and your fuel pump quits, you have just run that engine as lean as lean can be. Did you hurt it..........highly unlikely. No fuel, nothing to burn, no heat. A nitrous motor is the same way.......too little fuel, it has nothing to burn, so it just makes no power, it does not eat parts.

I am sure, make that, I KNOW, that others will not agree and we hear stories of "I had a clogged fuel jet, burned my motor up", etc, etc, etc. All I can say, is that I have been using nitrous, for more than 30 years and I can say with conviction, that I have NEVER burned up a motor with a lean tune, nor have I had a piece of trash, or whatever, in a fuel jet, hurt anything. But that's just me..............lol

When people do attempt to get their tune more in line, by cleaning it up and fail to take additional timing out, is usually when the damage happens. Then they incorrectly deduce, that they got it too lean."~per Monte Smith

Thanks..........

sorry if I high-jacked this thread!

thanks again for the info, LSOHOLIC ...

we didn't log the runs ... our train of thought today was not to make more then one change at a time and we did two, one was me staging a little deeper, ... then the rain came.

Thanks Pit!!
I think they were N/A -- I just spoke to my mechanic and he said the nitrous came on at 5K (I'm not doing the programing) in 1st so it may have just kicked in ... not sure ... I so wanted to get a 1.3X :D

Back when I had my 3400 converter, footbraking it to 2300-2500 before I floored it worked best

With my 4000-4200 converter, footbraking it to 3500 works best

RonSSNova 08-12-2012 03:05 AM

I was leaving at 2000 and the car was spinning. Tried 1700, spun. Ran out of time and they booted me for no roll bar.

I went too low on the pressure in the Hoosiers as well, I felt the dreaded tire shudder.

So I don't know Hugger....my first time on DR's in a stalled C5 as well.

I'll try again when the bar is in the car.

I did manage to run 11.30s though 121-122 mph.

we are similar on launch rpm. i launch at 2200 to 2400 with a 3600 converter. i run 3.73 gears and 4l60e trans and cut mid 1.3 60ft times. if stalled deep for faster reaction time racing index races usually 1.4 to 1.47 sixties

You mind if ask what your tire and wheel setup is? Your car cuts a killer 60ft
