igntion coil/ heat sink/ ICM...are these supposed to be 'grounded'?
I have the ignition coil, heat sink and ICM relocated (to make room for my supercharger) on my 93 lt1.
Is the ignition coil / heat sink meant to be grounded to the motor (or chassis ground) ? It doesnt seem like it is because there is talk of using dielectric grease on the underside of the heat sink. Would it do any harm / good for it to be 'grounded'? Heat is not an issue any more where I have it mounted. |
Yes they need to be grounded. If you look to the right hand side of the coil on the block there is a ground wire.

Or is this a separate wire? I ask this because I have a Mallory? ignition coil in place of the stock one. |
It is separate, next to the top right hand side coil bolt. All ignition parts need a ground.

The ICM should have THERMAL grease under it, NOT dielectric grease. It gets VERY HOT and needs heat sinking to a good solid hunk of metal.

Agree with what Cliff said. Heat sink compound on the ICM and bracket. I moved mine to the SC mounting bracket.

If anybody has a picture, thatd be amazing. I ask all these questions because I see sparks arcing from the metal strap housing to my chassis - when looking at the coil at night. |
