Oil change ramp suggestion

I need some opinions.

C6 in my sig and I do all my oil changes... I have a 2x6 ramp setup I use for my cars that was cheap and works fine.... It was however pretty marginal height wise for my 2001 Trans Am... I think it will be too low for the vette..

Any suggestions on front ramp's for the vette for oil changes?

My 2x6 setup has 3 lifts... so about 6" maybe a little less of lift from it....

Thanks in advance for any suggestions and Merry Christmas..

I use the 56 inch ramps from Race Ramps. These provide you with 8 inches of lift. They're great for oil changes.

Merry Christmas

Some people have said you can do an oil change on the C6 with no ramps at all- just turn the front wheels to the side and use a long extension for the drain plug.

If that's true (I haven't tried it), then you won't need very big ramps at all to do it comfortably.

Give us your opinion after you decide!

Hi JW.....

What would shipping be to 94550?

Jim... how would we be able to get a drain pan under there?

6-inch ramp is more than enough.

If you back onto the ramps, you'll have easy access to the drain plug & oil filter from the driver's side. Like this:

To get more complete drainage, lift the passenger's side a little. Any ol' jack will do.

CAUTION: Use a jacking puck to keep your jack pad from touching the rocker panel; otherwise, you can damage the panel.

If you don't have jacking pucks, I found that an ordinary unmodified hockey puck works just fine.

If you use a creeper the race ramps are about the minimum height for me. I didnt like the price when I bought them a few years ago but I'm glad I bought them.

Thanks for all the input...

Question though.... no mention of Rhino Ramps for +- $50.00... any reason why?

They are too steep and will drag the front of the car, you can build a mini-ramp and get a regular C5/C6 on them if it isnt lowered,

LS14ME2 12-21-2012 03:04 PM

I think I will go with the 56" Race Ramps... Thanks for everyones input....

JWM shows free shipping...

2x10?

Lightfoot, are those ramps made out of 2X10's?

BWF07 12-21-2012 09:41 PM

I have a set of the double 2x 12's, but that is only so I can get the jack under it. I like to jack mine up front ah back, then use jack stands. I like to have the car level for the oil change.

I don't use ramps.

I just use whatever walmart rhino ramps has. They worked fine for me. Im not spending $200 on ramps.

No, they're 2x12.

By actual measure, they're 1.5 x 11 inches. So I only get a 3-inch lift, which is fine for oil changes but not much else.

As others mention, doing an oil change without ramps is do-able. Long & limber arms help... my first oil change was difficult because a factory gorilla must've tightened the drain plug. Also, you'd need a low-profile drain pan... 6-qt capacity would be full, unless you have the 10.5-qt dry-sump system.

Tonylmiller 12-21-2012 10:45 PM

I drove mine up a ramp of two 2 x 10's so that I could get a jack under it. It is easy from there.

Really? I just used the 56" race ramps to change the oil on my GS a couple days ago. If you are lowered maybe but I have used these on every C5 and C6 I owned with no problem.

but man I paid a lot less for mine when they first came out..

blkvet6 12-21-2012 10:52 PM

Yup, "Race Ramps" for me also. They work perfectly, make the job a cinch.

I use Rhino Ramps for my other vehicles. In reading posts about C6 ramps/oil changes, I saw several people mention using Rhino Ramps.
I recently completed an oil change at the beginning of Dec. using the Rhino Ramps. No problem.
And instead of using the driver-side approach, I approached from the front of the car. :willy:

Good luck with whatever choice you decide upon.
