Possible purchase of an 06 with 147k miles
I am looking at an 06 coupe auto magnetic ride control with 147,000 miles. Everything works as it should as near as I can tell. The current owner purchased the car in 07 with 11,000 miles and used it as a daily driver. The water pump was replaced recently. He claims that the trans has had a fluid and filter change. Anything in particular I should look for? If anyone with a high milage C6 has any input your help would be appreciated. I curently own a 96 CE vert LT4 with 159,000 miles and enjoy it very much! Thanks for any advice.

I seriously hope he isn't asking any more than $17,000 for it.

Unless you are getting a great deal, I would pass on it since you will have a lot of trouble selling it in the future. Not sure if anyone will be willing to purchase a 200K miles C6 in a few years.
|
147k miles is getting to where future problems start to change from "possible" to "probable". The car might go another 147k without major issues, some have already; or you might be needing a new engine or tranny or xxx relatively soon. Or a series of minor but annoying and expensive problems.
The life span of any car is somewhat of a crapshoot, but you are getting toward that area where the dice will be loaded against you. The price should reflect that. OTOH, if I don't like the C7, then we will probably try to get 200k or more from our 2009... |
I certainly wouldn't want a magnetic ride car with that many miles. I'd be expecting the tranny to need refreshing. The motor is probably fine, unless it was wailed on. Do a compression/leakdown test.

I'd much rather have a car with 147K mostly highway miles at a really good price, than an identical one with 47K all city miles at a much higher price.
|
I would look for something with less miles. There are lots out there. You just looking for trouble.

Comes down to price. How much?

Note: when I said asking price, I meant I hoped he was asking that. I would only offer $15,000.

Too funny...yes, you said "asking any more than $17,000 for it" but now that you know it is "I would only offer $15,000".
I first stated that I hoped he was only asking $17,000. I have plenty of 120,000+ mile vettes being offered at $24,000+. Ridiculous. So I stated that I hoped he was asking that much. The OP said he OFFERED $17,000, not that the seller was asking that. Obviously he was asking more, though the amount is unknown. I then responded that I would only offer $15,000. As you were. |
I bought a C6 back in June with 98k highway miles on a very well taken care of car. Check all the history to make sure everything looks good but all I can say is I'm now past 104k and no issues.

Too bad they don't also keep track of the hours on an engine, like an airplane. Think about a car that is a DD that does a commute in logjam traffic every day, like in metro Los Angeles and silmilar around the country. The hours would be disproportionally large compared to the miles.
|
Just two questions: is this car going to sit mostly in your garage and be driven 2K miles (or thereabouts) per year? And, how much money do you have on hand (and are willing to spend) if something major (say $2K or more) goes kaplooey in the first year you own it, again in the second year, more than one major thing in the first year?
If you're all smiles and dollars ready, buy it. If not, and you can afford the price of entry but not if things happen.....well, yhou probably know where I'm going with these questions. |
