Cool to see 3 brand new ZO6's. Funny to see one headlight come up after the other (slight lag) in MacDonald's white ZO6 even brand new like mine currently does.

Great video. MacDonald did not stay with the Z06 very long. Most of the Corvette hot shoes of the day defected to the Shelby camp after the Cobra's debut at Riverside in late '62. MacDonald died in a fiery crash at Indy in '64 along with Eddie Sachs and a couple of other drivers whose names I cannot remember. He was an incredibly aggressive driver.

Yeah I was a 13 year old kid at the Indy 500 in 1964, and that crash happened directly in front of us. I immediately began snapping pictures with my new Kodak Instamatic camera, still have them here..............such a tragedy. :sadangel: I correspond frequently with Dave's younger brother, sent him copies of the pics a few years ago, at his request.

That was the year that Ford had seven entries with their SB with a very sophisticated 4 cam motor and heads. Both Sachs and MacDonald were driving cars powered by Ford that year. I remember the race--not because of the accident so much--but because of the fist fight that erupted some time before the race between Sachs and AJ Foyt. That was a big headline back then.

Yup, a real tragedy, and one that could have been avoided. IIRC, MacDonald was stuck with an ill handling pig of a car designed with 12" wheels by Mickey Thompson, but forced to run 15" wheels by USAC, thus raising the cg and making it very loose. Other drivers, such as Graham Hill, Masten Gregory, and Jim Clark either refused to drive it or advised MacDonald not to do so. :sadangel:

It is very amazing at what is out there in home movies. It is a shame many will be thrown away by kids cleaning out their parent's stuff with no idea how much they mean to many out here in the hobby.

Back in '76 I think, a guy came to one of the Mississippi Valley Corvette Association meetings in Alton IL with about an hour of home movies of the Grand Sports running at Rantoul and Lawrenceville in 1963. The Grand Sports were still in white and with stock fenders. Several of us were glued to that screen. Back then, most had no idea what a Grand Sport was. It was before Bob Patterson's Grand Sport was in Corvette News and everyone "discovered" them.

I tried to get copies of them, offering to pay for copies, but he was so swarmed by the leaders of the club trying to get him to join (and probably insulting his car), he slipped out without me getting his number.

I've wondered what happened to them. He knew what they were but didn't have an idea of how much they meant to others, and if he died, I'm sure any of the family would have no idea they were worth anything.

I wonder how many generations of copies were done on that original 8 mm kodak film. In those days, home movies were just starting to come into vogue. All in all, great Corvette history.:thumbs:
