Cold Air Induction Hood Mod for Stock 80' Hood

*Added video results - Post #63*

I started this mod over the Holidays and thought I'd post a couple pics of my idea and what I've got done so far.

I marked off my stock hood and made a cardboard template.

Next I used the template to cut out the piece I need out of a fiberglass panel.

I removed the hood and prepped it for attaching the fiberglass panel.

I used Norton's Speedgrip Adhesive to attach the panel to the hood.

I now have the air chamber done. The front will seal against the radiator support when closed. I still need to cut out the opening for the air cleaner.

Next I will modify my air cleaner base to create a pan that will seal my existing air cleaner assembly to the new cold air chamber. This pic kinda gives you the idea I'm after.

This is my existing air cleaner assembly. I plan on sealing around it so it can still draw air in from the sides and also the XStream Air Flow Top.

Thanks Guys! This weekend I'm going to re-install the hood and take measurements for the air cleaner modifications. My Buddy at work is going to help me out with TIG welding the air cleaner mods, hopefully next week if all goes as planned.

I ran into some clearance issues with the hood and had to take a hole saw and drill a couple areas to clear the ac line from the compressor, and serpentine tensioner. Also the upper rad hose hits, but I don't think its too bad since I have it rapped with a plastic shielding. I'll glass those areas later. I did realize one of the reasons why I was having problems with my ac. The 87' vette compressor ac line is higher than the original and did not clear the stock hood, so it had a kink in it. I made it worse when I just test fit the hood. :hide: So it's going to have to come out, try cutting it down and tig weld it. I swapped to the 87' vette compressor and line when I did my serpentine mod. I didn't have time to measure for the air cleaner mods yet, so I still need to get that done. I'm thinking that I'll extend the side wall out about an inch all the way around my 14" filter. In the back I can only go about 3/4" because of the distributor, but I can bring the front out a little more than an inch. I have to check all the measurements and see exactly what I have for clearance around the air cleaner.

I don't have a picture, yet, of the rubber seal that will go around the box - but you get the idea :)

I like yours too

Just a quick update.

It turns out that modding my existing air cleaner is more of a PITA than it's worth. So I found a vendor online that makes a cowl style air cleaner and ordered one. It looks like I won't receive it until the end of this month. Hopefully it works out, though I'll have to modify it a bit. I'll update with pics when it's installed. Hopefully when all is done I'll have a nice ram air hood that looks stock.

i have an 80 and will be watching for this. I have to repaint my hood this spring because of a bad motormount. So it would be a good time to get some air in there if i can... The motormount thing was a sad, happy moment... found out that the new motor runs very well, found out that the old motor mounts do not take that much power! oops...

Ouch! I have poly mounts on mine.

I went with a Ram Air Box and carbon fiber extension to the radiator mount on my '80. There is quite a bit of area between the radiator and the raised part of the stock '80 hood. Just don't use a conventional stud and wing nut to hold the air cleaner cover on. Just use a flat head 1/4" machine screw instead.
