71 roadster frame off (part 2)

I started this project back in 2005, I worked on it nonstop for almost a year and got burned out. It sat in the corner of my shop untouched for 5 years until a few weeks ago. after seeing some really nice early C3's at Crusin the Coast this year I got inspired to finish it. My progress post from 2005 are no longer here so I will try to document progress with photos.

this is the day I drove it home

That is a lot of work. I can see why you took a corvette sabbatical with some time off. I like looking at the frame off restorations. It makes my weekend tinkering on mine feel small by comparison. But then I think about your story and photos and it keeps me motivated.

Good luck on getting it finished soon.

now to current progress.
new March serpentine system installed

http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a1...ADAC890A52.jpg

the upper windshield frame was replaced 5 years ago and careful measurements were taken. this weekend the windshield was installed and it fit. thank goodness

next up fit the wiper door and hood, then bond the front clip. Also for future reference staybil does not last 5 years. I will be replacing the tank and fuel pump and also the rubber fuel lines. the fuel must have had ethanol because the 5 year old rubber lines are soft and coming apart.
clip of it running

Mark--

Love the color on the car... You've done some great work... Can you give me some details on the bracket you used to mount the PS reservoir to the valve cover (that's what it looks like in the pic)...

Thanks much

the bracket is simply a piece of 3/4 inch angle iron cut and welded into an inverted "L" and is bolted to the two existing holes on the head where the old power steering bracket mounted. the aluminum bracket holding the reservoir came with it, it came from summit racing. here is another picture. I need to get a shorter mounting bolt.

Thanks Mark, makes sense... It would be nice if one of the manufacturers would make a nice mounting bracket to locate the res right where you have it...

Been toying with the firewall install and long line runs... Read it is not the best solution, but March said it would not be a problem...

mine is a big block and with the headers there was no way it could go anywhere else except maybe the apron just above the control arm. I like this location better, looks nice and neat and the hoses have less of a chance rubbing on anything because it moves with the motor. the bracket is very easy to make and only took about 30 mins to fab.

Hey guys, look closely and pay close attention to this trick Gator uses. Note the aluminum foil wrapped around the lines. If I'm correct, he's masking off the lines so they won't get any paint on them, while he's spraying.

We got taught that early last year, by an old pro. I purchased a twenty pound roll of aluminum foil from Costco and that stuff is damn near a miracle! Instead of spending hours wrapping paper and blue tape around everything, we just grab a big old sheet of foil, tear it off and wrap it around whatever needs to be masked off or left unpainted. It works great and saves a ton of time on set up and clean up.

yes tinfoil is your friend, I learned that trick years ago and it works great, another trick is vaseline on smooth surfaces like fins on an old aluminum rim. in this picture I was protecting the lines and header from paint. you would be surprised how little tape you use when you use foil.

Great job, just gives me more incentive to get working on the 74 real soon, as I am taking 3 weeks off in June, to go at it like a full time job, can't wait.....
I enjoy looking at the pics and seeing the progress you are making.

I will pick up some tin foil.........nice tip....

temporary setback

a little bump in the road when installing my front clip, either the front radiator support is shifted to the passenger side or the body may not be square on the frame (I used the line up holes when bolting it back on). any way the original hood hinges were slotted very much to make it line up.. the front clip has been off this car before and it may have been hit. we are going to get the tram out and check the frame. if it is off it is only minor and I have a friend with a frame machine so we can pull it. here are some pics

my temporary set up to hold and adjust the core support. it works very well.

Holy crap...tin foil. Unbelievable.

I'm rebuilding my engine and, as a side project, freshening my engine bay.

The PO painted the frame silver, so I'm going to maintain the theme and replace it with a hammer-finish silver. The firewall and fenders will be flat black.

I was wondering how long the tape job was going to take. Wonder no more!!!

TIN FOIL!!!
