Toasted trans
After dropping my trans off last week to be rebuilt, I called today to check up and see how the progress was going. When I initially brought it in I lost 3rd and 4th gear thinking I burnt the clutches up, because it still drove fine in 1st and 2nd and didnt shift hard or anything. Well they said the pump went and everything was toasted. He said he hasnt seen anything like this in a long time and told me to check the flexplate to see if it is cracked or broke otherwise it would be a freak accident the way it went pretty much. I assumed it was me not properly installing the tv cable correctly right before it went, but he said the way the trans looks theres no way it was from the cable. I recently bought the car and dont know how it was driven prior to buying it. Could it just be from to much power/torque for the stock trans and just over time deteriorated ? I just find it strange the pump went and all the clutches be fried and telling me to check the flexplate. Just curious to thoughts

Flex plates are cheap, you can find them anywheres for 50 bucks.
Now that your looking at a complete rebuild I suggest you find a performance tranny shop and buy it. The cost of overhauling yours plus the performance options are not going to equal a well built tranny. Ask around or someone will chime in with the best shops in the country. |
I've seen tranmissions end up like that if they had a large cam and not enough stall.

Where are you located? I use RPM trans in Muncie IN. they are a supporting vendor on here and do alot of Vette/Viper and other high performance high $$ stuff. If I remember right the Vette 7oor4 has a different govenor that is sought after by the drag racers or somthing ???? May be worth saving and reusing? Maybe someone else can verify.
