Tadge explains why 6 vs 8 speed auto...

Look at 10:30 in the video. From CorvetteBlogger...

Whole interview is good but this is specific info/philosophy on the auto tranny from Tadge.

He basically says the 6 is fine for a high torque engine and that finding an 8 spd that will fit and doesn't add a lot of weight/mass is difficult. Doesn't really address the future but says that the increasing speeds in autos these days is like a marketing arms war. He seems to be saying that an 8 isn't really needed at this point.

Great video, he answers a lot of questions. I like the fact that he said they havent shared everything about the car.

jkcam6017 01-23-2013 12:14 PM

Yep, if you are trying to get 240hp out of a 2.0L like the BMW Z4, you need the 8 speeds to keep it near the peak RPM, on the Vette..."We don't need no stinking 8 speed."

Talked about rev match and how you can more the shifter around and watch the rpms jump to the new RPM and that it may be fun to try to turn it off and try to do as good as it does. You have the master knob to change settings but in the center stack you can mix match functions like loud exhaust and stiff ride in tour mode. I want this car more and more; the more I learn!! I also am more of a Z06 guy but the base car is looking great!

Agree...would have liked Tadge to expand a bit on what info they're holding back. Even just a hint at what type of info they'll be releasing later...then again, perhaps it's the Z__ info we're already speculating/hearing about. :D

My 2012 BMW Z4 with the 4 cyl turbo engine and 8 speed auto trans runs about 2,000 to 2,200 RPM at 70 MPH. It is not "wound up" by any means. When I go from comfort mode to sport the RPM's increase about 300 or so. On a recent rally of 200 to 300 miles all of it at altitude, I got around 40 MPG. That's one of the benifits of an 8 speed auto transmission. Of course the Vette doesn't need no stinking 8 speed. That's good because you don't have one avaliable.
GM is behind the 8 ball once again.
Vehicles that currently have an 8 speed auto transmission include. BMW 5 6 and 7 series. Lexus LS series. BMW X5. Jaguar F roadster 8 speed auto. INfinity IR G coupe 7 speed auto.
If you don't have an 8 speed auto, and ev erybody else does, then you have to say something like we don't need it.

Feeling a bit more secure with the decision to go with the 2014 A6. I'm happy with the A6 in my '09 and I have heard the '12's programming took it to the next level. For someone like me who uses the 'vette as a long distance highway commuter car, I think it'll be more than adequate.

That Z4 ....you need an 8 speed and further more you should be banned from corvette conversations until you get more HP and Torque...Horsepower: 240 @ 5000
Torque: 260 @ 1250 - 4800

In your guestimation, he didn't come-off that the 8 sp auto would even be in the very next model year(2015) ?

:iagree: Exactly! This is the same nonsense like the Honda S2000, screaming at 8 or 9 thousand rpm,s and nothing happening.

C7 Vette = American Muscle in a refined package. All other dreamer cars please step aside and just watch safely from a distance.

Also the he said they cant find an auto trans that can plug and play with Corvettes HUGE amount of torque? I thought it was 450 lbs of torque? I see several automatic trans handling much more torque than 450 my CTS V for one? Unless it is a fitment issue or maybe it will have much more than 450lbs of torque?

Doesn't sound like it.

FASST LN 01-23-2013 01:06 PM

While he dismisses the 8-speed auto and states the 6-speed auto is sufficient, then how could he also support their decision to abandon the 6-speed manual to go with a 7-speed manual?

Apparently they feel more gears are better if you look at the change to the manual transmission. It sounds like he's just covering for GM not having a DC or new/better offering for the automatic over the existing A6.

Anyone know what the shift times are for the A6 in the C6? I wasn't aware there was an improvement to such in 2012.

Kinda funny, when Big Gunz was asked about this over on the other board, he mentioned that they were having problems with the torque destroying transmissions during testing...hmmmm...something is up

Hmm...my old '05 runs at 1450 rpm at 70...while I get a consistent 28-30 mpg. Tell me again why we need an 8 speed in a C7 that has at least 50 more hp and a whole lot more torque that will get even better mpg?

I wonder if that new sportscar, from Hyundai or was it Kia, would beat a Z4?

The new 7 speed manual is nothing more than a TR6060 with an extra overdrive gear in the back half of the transmission for EPA/MPG bragging rights. Nothing more--nothing less. The gearing for 1-4 remains identical to the current Z51 model.
