2006 Z06 question

I have the oppertunity to purchase a 2006 Z06 with 19K miles for $40k. Should I stay away from the 2006 model due to the heads issue?

Just get PRC heads with SS valves and no more issues.

The LS7 head issues, excessive valve guide wear, dropped exhaust valves, do not appear to be year model specific.

All year models are apparently vulnerable to them.

So if you're going to avoid a 2006 based on that, then you may as well avoid any of the rest of the years as well.

The head issue affected all years of LS7, IIRC.

Since you probably cannot acquire a warranty, and just in case the '06 did inhale an exhaust valve? Many here & myself included would suggest you be proactive, get WCC heads w/ redone guides etc.

Around $3K for heads, figure it in to the price you negotiate.

Good luck, the Z06 is an amazing once in a lifetime experience.
Making sure said experience is a positive one requires due dilligence with either warranty protection, or, reworked heads.

Hey Lucki. I think the price is pretty good for a low mile 2006. I would do my best to get the history of the car. Is it stock? Has the roof recall been done? Has it been tracked? How many owners? Get a carfax and GM history report. If all checks out I would spring for it if the condition is great. Good luck!

I it bone stock other then an after market intake. Only 2 owners, Clean carfax. Great shape. He told me he has not done the roof recall since the dealer told him the roof looked fine and he did not need to it. He still has the recall slip so I could always do it if there was a problem with the roof.

Don't think the issue is limited to a particular model year. Otherwise, it is possible that a particular car may not have the issue; you'd need to have it checked, which is unfortunately pretty much beyond what the average owner would allow in a pre-purchase inspection (requires removal of valve cover and valve springs). But, you'd need to budget and plan for some type of head repair just in case... odds seem to be running about 50/50 at best.

$40K sounds a tad high unless it is an exceptional car.

I would not avoid a 2006; with that low mileage, $40K is not bad if the car is in mint condition.

That is a high price

for a 2006. local dealer has a yellow 9,000 mile one owner 2008Z. They cannot get $46,900. It is a certified Chevy with warranty. I know it is a good car. These are dropping faster than some dealers realized they would. Wait till the C7 is really available. 2006Z cars are a $35,000 car real soon. Dealers know it, they are just going to try to not pass it on cause they are holding the bag.:willy:

my 06 was awesome...definetly the most raw z from the factory....would still have my 06 but lemans blue didnt work where i live....replaced it with a white 07....consider having the heads checked....any competent machine shop can do repairs if necessary...they can also be repaired for substaintially less than 3k...

Thank you everyone! I am trying to work out a deal with the owner.

Flareside 02-04-2013 08:17 PM

06Z is a great car, go for it. I've been having fun with mine since I bought it in 09, no issues at all other than the roof recall a few years ago.

I've been a member here for a long time, and I've noticed one thing about the C6Z forum. The more posts a member has, the more they're obsessed with valves... LOL Just buy the car and drive the crap out of it that's what I do.

You should stay away from it. Not because of the valves but because of the price. ;)
