Who has the first second position door mirror location on a 68?

I got my 68 coupe in July, 1972. After noticing the interior changes on 68's, I started documenting these changes. I had a letter published in Vette Vues Magazine, in 1977, which I have subscribed to since 1975. My survey turned up that I had the first, farther back, door miror location. All 68's before this have the door mirror right by the windshield pillar. Can anyone know for a fact that their car is earlier than my 14,842 with the " standard " farther back door mirror location? By the way, I did submit my information to the NCRS to help out with the new 68-69 judging manual, last fall. Lou.

Is this change listed in the 1968 AIM?

I have seen a few early '68s with the mirror in that position, like so many items on 68's it changed weekly for about the first 1/2 year

Melwiff, I have two 68 AIM's. The old one was the first one released to the public by Mid America. I just noticed that the page numbers are different than the new issue by Corvette America. The original release has drafting graphic chevrolet on the top, along with " assembly instructions ". This copy has page number H 129 at the top. The new, Corvette America copy has H 117 at the bottom. Another can of worms for us!
Both sheets are identical and the drawing shows the first location right by the windshield pillar. There are no revision remarks on the right side of the drawing. Lou.

427basketcase, I looked at a lot of 68's, when they were relatively new. Every time that I ran across a 68, I wrote down my data. I am from Cleveland (PARMA) Ohio and Cedar Point amusement park, in Sandusky, Ohio had an all corvette day. Over a thousand corvettes would attend. I belonged to the Corvette Cleveland corvette club. I never saw an earlier 68 with the second location. This change required the riveted tapping plate to be moved, inside the door skin. They would not have bounced around the mirror location. I feel that the assembly manual was not changed due to the fact that in assembly, the instructions are the same, only the location moved by a few inches on the door. Lou.

First position, forward.

My 68 AIM shows only the forward position and the page was never updated. My #16660 uses the second position.

My door or mirror must have been changed at some point, because #4473 should have had the mirror farther forward:

there goes my 3rd flight! :( :banghead:

My current '68 (s/n5338) has the mirror in the forward position on the door by the windshield pillar. My previous '68 s/n 0245 had the mirror moved back farther. Obviously, moved by PO or a different door was installed. Wouldn't surprise me much. Every other thing was changed or incorrect on the car. BK3

Ironcross, can you be certain that, that is the car's original door? I wish more people would post to help us out on this matter.

champs65 02-10-2013 07:58 PM

My car, #13358 uses the second position. No doubt in my mind it's the original door.

Champs65, Thank you for responding. I had collected data into two small notebooks. Just before I started looking at the corvette forum, I tossed them away. I assumed that the NCRS had already accumulated the data. From what I remember, I thought the next earlier car that I had found was about 1,000 earlier than my 14,842 and had the 1st mirror location.

I believe Wally is the original owner of that 68.

Mine is 15880, 2nd position.

loup68 02-16-2013 02:37 PM

Is the mirror location change mentioned in the new NCRS 68-69 manual, and does it have the serial number mentioned? Lou.

TOM65 L76 96 LT1 02-18-2013 03:12 PM

My coupe #18606 May 09 build has the mirror in the aft position on the door

my_z 02-18-2013 06:25 PM

Mine has first position. What are the #s you're posting, last five of the VIN? In that case mine is 07564..
