I tried using the laser but I found my unit the line is not very straight, at least not as straight as using strings. Also I found the laser light not very sharp over a 20 ft distance. But the idea shows that it is not that difficult doing an alignment after a bit of practice. I found the hardest part is getting the lines square to the car and equal on both sides.

I do nearly everthing needed for my cars. But, I don't do the 'infrequently needed' alignment thing. I leave that to the experts with the GOOD equipment.

Using four points from the chassis/frame, I used a plumb bob to locate said points to the floor after leveling car. I then found the center line of the four points and transferred that back to the chassis and for future use. While the c/l was still located on floor, I created two parrallel offsets to use in setting the alignment, tracking, & thrust angles.

Here's what I used in addition to a tape measurer fwiw.
