Magnetic Ride (To have or not to have)
 

Ok here is the delima, I am looking for a 427 or a Z06. Now don't hate me but I am going to drive it daily. I currently drive a 2010 Camaro 2SS. I have had it since Aug 09 and just now have 32000 on it. Saying that so you see I am a lower mileage driver. The issue is a 427 as you know has the Magnetic ride. I am looking at a Z06 that is a higher MSRP but significantly better deal, unfortunately the car does not have the optioned Magnetic Ride though. So, the question is for those who have it, is it a must have? I have only rode in 1 Vette that had it and I could tell a slight difference but driving it daily might make a world of difference. Thanks for any help.

For buying a new Z06, I think it is absolutely a must. The second generation magnetic suspension increases both comfort and handling; it even helps on launch by working on eliminating wheel hop! Please note it is not the same system offered on Grand Sports; they do come with first gen units when you get the option.

If you intended to race your car and replace the whole stock suspension with very harsh race hardware, then it would clearly not make sense in paying for something only to be (very painfully) removed. However, in your case, you intend to drive it daily, and I think it would be a huge mistake to get one without it considering how cheap the option is.

:iagree: Magnetic Ride has been discussed MANY MANY times out here, and if you search and read the posts, you will probably be just as confused as you are now, because most people who have never ridden or owned one bash it, for various reasons.

I daily drive my vettes too, close to 15k a year. I had a vette without it, and now own one that does (the "2-setting" Grand Sport") version, and I've driven (at Spring Mountain) the "5 setting" Z06/ZR1 version.

I would require the magnetic ride upgrade on any future vette.

As soon as I realized that some options were within my budget, magnetic ride was a top requirement. For poorly maintained roads it is simply amazing with it's stability and control. It really smooths out the ride quality. Wouldn't have another Corvette without it.

MSRC was a must have for me. Will be next time too. You won't be sorry if you get it and yes, I can feel the difference between the two settings in my coupe.

I agree with the above posts. Now that I have had Magnetic Ride, I will not own another corvette without it, period!

I didnt really want it, but it was standard in the 427 vert. It is nice and I doubt if I would get another one without it either.

It is absolutely not a must have....but between the 2 choices, I think it will be more based on whether or not you want a cruiser convertible or a supercar.

Like many options, surely mag ride is a nice one. Just be sure you have a big wallet if you blow a shock out of warranty. Something to keep in mind.

Only down side is after warranty they are expensive at over 1000 a piece.Bought 2012 z06 without it and hate it been trying to trade ever since to much diff to pay hell I can buy and convert for the diff 20000 for one year new and same car cost wise.

For a daily driver, a must have. Don't listen to the super thrifty types. If you go the el cheapo route, keep that in mind as you go over less than mainly smooth roads & a few fillings shake loose ( a little humorous exaggeration, but not by much). My 06 C6 had it, which I just replaced with a Caddy CTS-V that has it. My 10 GS doesn't have it ( it wasn't available in the GS until 2011 & if I had known it was coming in 2011, I definitely would have waited until 2011), & it's NOT great on less than mainly smooth roads.

I agree the magnetic ride is nice but not necessary. I have my car without it. Yes you feel some bumps but yes this is a sports car. I'm coming from a luxury sedan so maybe someone like me likes the suspension that you feel more.

Best advise is to try and find one both with and without and decide from there.

I have owned a C5 without magnetic ride, a 2006 coupe with it, two Z06's without it and now a 2011 ZR1 with it. Yes, I can notice the difference, but depending on the situation, I use both the touring and sport modes. Is it necessary? No. Is it nice to have? Absolutely. Would it be the deciding factor on buying a 427 or a Z06? Probably not. I enjoyed both of my Z06's without the magnetic ride. But if I did buy a new Z06, I would have ordered a Z07 with magnetic ride. Instead, I decided on a ZR1. However, at the end of the day it is your choice, because you will be driving the vehicle. But if you decide you want magnetic ride, buy a vehicle with it or you will always wonder if you should have got it.

For me, I would only have it if I was planning on having the car a few years and it was always going to be under warranty. If I were planning on keeping the car for a long time, I would rather not have the possibility of replacing extremely expensive shocks and being dependent on a computer to run them.:thumbs:

I have in on my GS that I daily drive, and I think it is a great option. I can feel the different even on smooth'ish roads but I know that is only because I drive everyday. Keep in my that the Z06 (according to reports) has the firmest out of various models.
