Ticking sound from right rear wheel/brake area
 

I have searched C5 Tech and C5 General looking for ideas to solve a noise issue on our 2000 convertible. There are a lot of theories, but I'm not finding many solutions.

This noise started after I changed rotors this last winter. It is a constant ticking sound that increases with speed and does not go away while braking. My wife has much better hearing than I and she describes it as a clicking (or ticking) sound that she hears at all speeds. Especially prevalent when passing a building or parked car.

I would really like to hear from anyone who has had this same sound and any theories on what you think it could be. I will start a list of things to check and if I can't locate the source and fix it, the car will need to go to a shop. Thanks for any help you can provide.

While not on a Corvette, a friend of mine had this issue with one of the clips in the bracket that wasn't seated quite right and was just barely touching the rotor.

shoot some grease into the cv axle splines then retorque the axle nut I think it is 117ftlbs :cheers:

take the rear brake apart again looking at how things are, chances are one of the pad clips shifted and a locking tab is touching the rotor.

I plan on getting the rear up on jack-stands today, spinning the wheels to see if I can hear anything, then taking the wheel off, removing the caliper, removing the rotor and visually inspecting everything I can think of. If I find anything I will report it here. In the meantime, keep the ideas coming.

If nothing else check the tire. I had a similar noise once and it turned out to be a screw stuck in the tire.

Two loose center caps seem to be the culprit. I jacked up the rear and put it on jack-stands, spun the rear wheels by hand and we didn't hear anything. As I was doing this my hand bumped the center cap and my wife said, "That's it. That is what I heard." Sure enough the right rear (and left front) center caps were slightly loose. I shimmed both tight with electrical tape on the prongs of the cap and we went for a test ride. No noise. :woohoo:

Nail or screw in the tire?? It does make tgat noise
