Is anybody worried about the LT1 ?
Does anybody have concerns about the new LT1 engine ? At least with the old LS engines going from LS2 to LS3 there was a lot of experience in making these engines and the parts were proven out over many years. Since this LT1 is brand new what is the chance that there will be problems and potential revisions to the engine after the first year of production ? I can't remember if GM has ever had a flawless engine launch but I have my doubts.

No, they already have many more hours/miles on these engines than most people will drive for the life of their car.
24 Hour stress tests going through 36 sets of tires/brakes/oil changes over the course of a week. 5 year / 100k mile warranty on the power train if anything does go sideways. |

I hear what you are saying but there was a lot of talk in the Z06 section about valves and valve guides. You would think that since GM was making that engine since 2006 that they would have sorted these issues out. Sometimes I wonder if the customers end up being the ones proving the design and doing the durability testing of the product. |
Nope.
Are you afraid of any new engine? Were you afraid of the LS1? |
They'll probably blow up all over the place, leaving oil and coolant everywhere. :crazy2:

It is not just the LS2 to LS3 switch which is relevant to look at. The entire LS series of engines, from clean sheet design with the original, to its current versions, have all been VERY GOOD engines haven't they? Were there problems with the original LS1 engines?

The text below is from Wikipedia. Apparently GM had issues with new engine designs. I don't know if that is still the case.
... Problems In the early production run of the LS-series engine, some engines encountered abnormal amounts of 'piston slap' - a problem caused by too much clearance between the cylinder bore and the piston. 'Piston slap' sometimes sounds more like a knock or the sound of a diesel engine running. It is typically worse when the engine is cold and lessens as the engine reaches operating temperature. The noise of 'piston slap' often is louder when listening for it below the oil pan. Another common problem with the 04-06 5.3L engines was cracking cylinder heads. This is commonly called the 'Castech Head' failure on the internet. GM issued a TSB on this failure to help service techs identify the problem. The head casting (which can be viewed from the passenger side of the vehicle just in front of the valve cover) was 706. Some heads with this casting number would fail, but not all of them as GM had different suppliers for the same head. The failure was due to undetected porosity around the oil drains in the head. |
No doubt there's a chance of discovering something when there's 20 or 30 thousand more in use. I guess it wouldn't scare me to get one, that's what a warranty is for.

This reminds me of a thread, months ago. When folks panicked and got pissed off that the C7's tires were going to be Goodyears. Lots of ridiculous "the sky is falling" wasted worries. Hmmmn...., just like this thread's topic and concerns.

Im affraid of half the cylinder's not staying lit.:D

Cars are so much better then they were years ago. I never worried about getting married, or a new job, or what could happen if, I just take a positive attitude towards what ever is new and it has not failed me yet.

It could be great or could be a real clunker. Only time will tell.
We had a 2001 with the oil-gulping "improved" ring design, so stuff does happen. And that was a very minor change. If someone wants to buy me a C7 so I can test it for them, just PM me... :D |

Do you really believe any manufacturer would put such a warranty behind an engine, in a mass produced car thats likely to sell 100,000+ units in the next 5 years or so? Are you guys really getting this bored with the lack of C7 info? |

L88 engine option (bored/stroked/etc. 'LS7-ified' LT1) + Comp Seats standard + Z51/MSRC/VTPE standard + 6-point roll cage & 5-point harnesses + front splitter & side skirts + fixed roof + carbon ceramic brakes = C7 Z06

Anything that have moving parts should be worried. I once have a wheel fell off while I was driving. LOL. And that wheel only have 5 lock nuts.

Did the 5yr/100k powertrain warranty somehow magically disappear with the LT1 announcement?

Are you guys really getting this bored with the lack of C7 info? I'm getting ready to spend $5,000 for new heads as soon as my warranty runs out in July on my 30,000 mile LS7. If it blows between now and then, then I'll most likely have to spend some money for an attorney as GM will probably say it was my fault because I was not entering/exiting the car correctly. I recommend that everyone put back some money, just in case the LT1 turns into a LS7. |
I look at the reports of LS7 issues and think "no reason to avoid a first-year engine -- it's not like they're going to fix stuff in the second year." Or third, or eighth... ;)
