I'm looking to have the best set up possible without having any movement what so ever in the bearings when at operating temperature. This way the entire bearing compliment is sharing the load rather than part of the compliment on each bearing. |
Based on generations of guys who tried the same thing as you propose.
If you were to set the bearing up at -.0005" at room temp, what would the clearance be at max. operating temp when it really counts.? |

The bearing and race expansion is not a factor at the operating temperature of the assembly. The cast steel bearing housing will grow very slightly, but negligible. The spindle will also grow, but I'm betting it will grow more in length ... Therefore my thoughts, at this point are there would be +.000? atrunning temperature. |
I set mine at .0005" many years ago when I installed them. I pulled them down a couple of years ago to inspect and re-lube. Still looked brand new and went back together with same dimensions. Many miles and many many dragstrip passes.
I've always set them up at .001" or less even on stockers. JIM |

I'd suspect if you contact the company, they'll have the answer for you. It sometimes results in information from an engineer that isn't the same as what many term as rule of thumb.
I had that situation with cylinder wall minimum thickness, when I contacted the manufacturer I was surprized with the response from them. I'd bet that their engineer will be able to tell you the expansion rate of all those materials, and how they relate to one another. |
If you set them up at 0.001" to 0.002", I'm sure you will be fine. I would not preload them, myself.

It's done... set the bearings up at .0000.
Required a bit of work on the surface grinder to get the shims to the thickness needed. |
