Lets get the new week started: Black Wheels or Not
Black wheels are all the rage this year, but will it carry? Do you think they cheapen the look to you, or do they scream contemporary.
Will they last or is this just a fad. |
Like them. Ordered them on my silver C7.

Black wheels = younger generation
Chrome = Old farts |
I do not love or hate Black, but I put hate because I prefer Aluminum or Chrome.
I actually have Black on my 911, but I would not have picked them. Everyone else loves them. I think black looks better when it has a Polished lip and it only looks good on certain colors. Blue with Black looks terrible, white or red looks good. By the way the painted wheels chip to easy also and despite what you may think I find them more difficult to keep clean than Aluminum or Chrome. |
VY over black around jet black. Actually my wife's first choice, too. Plus she wants the stick! God love her.
|
Dude, I'm officially classified as an old fart. At this age, a benefit is they just turn to dust ! But the question is, do the black wheels just make me feel younger, or look as if I know how to properly dress the car? Or both ???

I much prefer the look of chrome or high polished wheels so I'm not a real fan of all black wheels. If they just have a black center and a high polished lip, I think they look much better.

The black wheel haters are the same guys who put polished stainless steel all over these cars with 2 sided tape.
|
49 and black wheels
|
Black wheels look great and will be on my C7.
Not a huge fan of chrome on the C7, but respect that is what some ladies and gents like. |
I voted "Love Them" since this is the C7 section. The C7 with all the other black accents looks great with black wheels. Now for the C5 & C6 I prefer chrome in most cases. There are a few C5s & C6s here, imo, that look good with black wheels but most of those have aggressive mods that add to the "look" that makes the black rims fit.
|
I think it depends on the body color. Bright body colors pop with the black wheels, as does the red or yellow calipers. I feel the VVT option, (carbon black spoilers & mirror) are a bit too much black with those wheels, so that's about the only option I left off.
|
Black wheels were a fad 40 years ago, all we did was take off the hub caps.
That being said, I like the black wheels on certain colors. I prefer polished aluminum wheels with a clear coat finish, since they were not offered I ordered chrome wheels. I did respond to an offer here on CF, someone selling a set of black Z51 wheels when he gets the C7. I will buy them if the price is right. |
Like stated above, with all the black vents, black wheels look good on this car. I am 27 and would almost rather go chrome. Black does look good on the c7 but I'm just personally burnt out on them. Black wheels were huge in the tuner car scene. I want to see some nice gunmetal wheels on the car.
|
Easiest way to make a vette look fugly. Put black wheels on it.
|
Not a fan of all black wheels... they make the wheel disappear. Given that the wheel is the only piece on the car that you can see moving it has a dramatic effect on the overall look/feel of a car.
I do love 3-piece wheels with black centers and a nice polished lip though. |
They don't show the black dust as bad!
|
Not only am I getting the black wheels..... with red calipers to POP behind them ......
......I am also adding the carbon flash mirrors and spoiler to my Torch red Z51 .....but I am sticking with the body colored top .....Raced out is how I like my sports cars....raced out......:) |
My car will be crystal red with Visible carbon fiber roof, carbon flash on the hood, and black interior so I feel I have enough black on the car and I went with the Z51 chrome.
|

GM sells chrome and black wheels because some people like chrome and some like black. Everyone does not have to have the same color. Get over it.
|
I'd rather see various shades of tinted clear powder coats on naked aluminum like what HRE offers.
Tough and classy look. |

But there are some who feel their choice is the only right one, and have to insult everyone elses. I am a young 56, and getting the Black Wheels with Laguna Blue, so clearly the young/old farts theory is not an exact science. Everyone should get what they like, and leave it at that, why some find the need to be insulting is beyond me? Oh...I know why....... Immaturity.... :leaving: |
couldn't vote, because I really like both. My white C7 will have
chromies.... but there's a 50% chance that I'll trade them in. :willy: |

Both chrome and black wheels are for people who know nothing better. Thanks to aftermarket there will be quality wheels with right materials and finishes available.
|
I would order Velocity Yellow with the standard silver Z51 wheels. I'd use them for track wheels and mount A6s on them. Then I'd buy a nice 3-piece wheel with a gloss black center with a polished center cap and polished lip.

chrome is for showing what you own
Black is for track.. Im a poet and didnt even know it :D |
I wish there was a "meh" category. I do like black wheels with certain IF they have polished lips to make them stand out a bit. I used to own a silver C5 with that look and it got tons of compliments. I even think all-black wheels on some cars look good, particularly where there is a big contrast (like the bright reds and yellows) and lots of black trim/scoops/what have you. But, overall I think they are a periodically recurring fad which will not have the staying power of a well-designed polished wheel.
For me, polished and gray wheels look best. I am not a huge fan of chrome (full disclosure -- I bought my current Z with chrome already on the car and have been too cheap to refit with the proper wheels.) |

Chrome = Old farts NRB...black wheels, black interior. Wouldn't have it any other way. |
I have a little homage to Ferrari going on with my C7 on order; black wheels, yellow calipers, torch red, Kalahari 2LT interior...
|
Black wheels all the way for me. Either way one chooses, though, I love what the designers have done with the options for this model year. You can truly customize the vehicle to look elegant or agressive, thus giving the driver the ability to change the "tone" of the vehicle.
At the end of the day, this new Corvette made me decide to pull the trigger, and become a new Corvette owner. Many of my friends who would never have before considered this storied franchise, are now mulling it over and are placing orders as we speak. No matter what wheels one chooses, they all look great, a true halo car for the younger driver who wants to buy American, and a HUGE win for GM in the under 40 crowd, IMHO. :flag: |
I did not used to like them but the more and more I've seen, there are a quite a few cars with black wheels that look great.
Case in point. Centennial ZR1. Ooooh! She's a real beaut, Clark. http://www.corvetteblogger.com/image...2/021512_1.jpg |

I have ran Black and Machine finish wheels on one of my C6s and Black ZR1 wheels on my GS and currently run black wheels on my CTS V. Once you go black you never go back..

48 years OLD today and I ordered black wheels on my arctic white Z51.

not.

Not a fan of all black wheels. I like the black wheels with a polished lip or something like below.

59 now, I like black.

anything but the tin foil look...Please let chrome die gracefully. That is all.
|
Must have black wheels... Matter of fact, the only chrome on my H-D is the handle bars and the exhaust.
|
I personally like a dark graphite wheel more than black, chrome or silver. The Grand Sport graphites are amazing in my humble opinion. Love the look of the entire C6 GS package.

I'm a fan. Have been since about 2007 when I got mine.
I think I prefer them with a thin, body-colored rim/lip, though, these days. That's a pretty sexy look. |

I'm 50 but I don't feel old. I'm also female, but when I see black wheels I think of when people have a spare without a hubcap lol..

Black, white, red, orange, wgaf, it's no different than the color of your interior or soft top. 2) From what I can see, the woman in your avatar is hot, if you're together, good for you. |
I didn't vote because I don't hate or love them. I have given serious thought to ordering a Torch Red with black wheels and red calibers, but like others have pointed out, I just don't know if black will be a passing fad or worse, this decade's "spinners," so i may go silver. Sometimes the polished lip black wheels just look kind of like white walls. I've also been toying with the idea of painting body color accents on black. Maybe I'll try to post some of my photo edits. I don't trade vehicles often, so I want a look that will stand the test of time.
|
I voted to hate them only because I don't love them. The black wheels look ok on some colors. If you did the same poll on chrome wheels I may have also the same way.
I like the comp gray that are on my car and also like polished aluminum. |
On lighter colored cars, white, red, yellow, silver, inferno orange, dsom orange type colors, lighter greens, etc., black wheels look great and I love them.
They actually look good on most black Corvettes also. I am a big fan and when they get super dirty they stilll look cool b/c they look like dark graphite wheels and its great for those who are not much into washing their cars too ofen . |
"All the rage this year"?
Darker, more purposeful wheels have been commonplace and preferred for performance-oriented cars for the better half of a decade now. The black wheel "rage" has always been prevalent among racers and dragsters, off and on road... it hit the manufacturer mainstream several years ago. |
I don't hate them, but I don't love them.

Look for next Monday's "what is your preferred wheel finish" poll  |
Not a fan of black wheels at all - think wheels need at least a bright rim to define the outlines.
I like this wheel personally. Looks quite classy to me. http://i441.photobucket.com/albums/q...pse1f1375c.jpg |
We need another option for voting such as it depends. they look fine on some car colors, but not so much on others. So I would vote maybe if I had the option.

All black did not turn me on...at least not totally. I opted to do aftermarket machined faced with a black combo. So for now I ordered the silver painted Z51 wheels.:D

Black wheels are the new in!

With so many voting that they hate black wheels, will that affect resale values?

The safest bet for resale values would probably be painted silver (versus chrome or black). |

Based on the poll responses and postings here, it looks like there will be plenty of each, thus the supply and demand should be good enough for everyone to be able to have their choice in the used market and not affect resale prices!  |

Depends on exterior color for me. Originally had CGM on order. Considered black wheels but thought CGM looked much better with silver painted wheels. But I changed my exterior color to CRT and thought the black wheels (Z51) looked better. Guess that makes me an old fart trying to get younger.

I've been a fan of black wheels for a while now...I ran them on my 98 Toyota Supra TT...in 1998 before the fast and furious craze occured. The thing about black wheels is they are subdued and don't detract from the look of the car...bright wheels stand out and take attention from the car itself. That's how I feel. I like a bit of contrast in my wheels and am seriously considering a set of HRE P40's done kinda like the pic below but instead of where the sides of the spokes are black they would be machine finish while the face is black...http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2343/3...da997d24_z.jpg
