Finally got a quote to paint
 

Went today and spoke with a local paint and body, the owner previously worked for a corvette specialty shop.

We talked, and the plan is to paint, basecoat/clearcoat, the rear bumper, headlight covers, and top part of the car except for the hood which is in great shape already... and the newly acquired license plate filer I got off e-bay which is currently silver.

Quote is 1200, with wet sanding, fixing a small fender crack, prep, and he ensures will be correctly done (where his previous experience comes into play). Paint will have lifetime (as long as he is in business) and workmanship 5 years.

Sounds reasonable on the quote? I think I am going to pull the trigger in 2 weeks.

That actually sounds cheap! If they guarantee a color match to the rest of the car, I'd say go for it.

Are they removing the rear cover or painting it on the car? The material of the bumper covers is different and requires a flex additive to the paint so if its hit, it stays flexible and the paint doesn't crack. You should ask him about that.

My brother has a body shop and I was there Friday, he had bought a gallon of Torch red paint and clear. It cost $941.

People don't realize how much material alone cost.

Great price. You can get good paint at a good price, and with urethane, you do not need flex additives. You can also get good results without having to remove the bumper.

$1200 sounds pretty cheap really. Almost sounds to good to be true, but you must be the judge of that.

What do you mean by top part of the car except for hood?

If the color match isn't perfect, you are going to be very sad for not painting the whole car

To be honest I am not looking for perfection, if I were I be paying to paint the car what I paid for it, 5-7K

Right now the paint, although being nice and shiny, is sort of a mess. What I am gathering is the hood was repainted in the past with a good base/clear but then the PO at some point repainted the rest on the cheap with a single stage. Well the single stage turned/faded and now doesn't exactly match the hood, though it is close. Texture however is very noticeably different between the 2.

Going with a base/clear on the rear cover, and everything above the bumper guard line will get the car a nice uniform color and texture. Everything below the bumper guard line will match in color fine since it really has not turned/faded like the top but the texture will be off still, however, short of looking at it from a sitting position from various angles it won't really be noticeable.

What I am also considering is just doing the rear cover and spending even less but I think the $1200 solution is a decent compromise between doing the whole car and just doing the rear cover, which will look decent from most angles.

When we spoke about the car and the paint, he recommended not doing the bottom, as he felt it wouldn't be worth the extra cost, and that what he was suggesting would look good and I would be happy with it.

I like your painter, sounds like a smart guy. If you can fix your existing paint job to your satisfaction for 1200 bucks, that's awesome.

I think I got lucky finding him... 3 blocks from my house, used to work at a Corvette body shop, and he knew right away that those shops wouldn't touch my car unless they did the WHOLE car taking everything apart, for 6Kish... which I confirmed with earlier phone calls.

So getting a guy that knows and loves Corvette's willing to do a decent job on a car that was bought for 6K.

Will post results in a couple weeks once she gets sprayed.

Actual Ferrari red paint. Special red color

$300 to $400 a sprayable gallon for red. Id say 5 to 600 for material. It is a very good deal if it turns out nice.

Red is the most expensive color. Can be almost double of what other colors cost. Don't know why, but have seen it many times.

Have never seen a match by panel spraying. I had a body shop on the side for over 20 yrs. There are way to many verations in mixing coats ect to get a match with out blending in panels. If you know this going in not a problem. Some paints are just crazy in price. Do some flames in chrome illusion at over 600.00 a pint

He is booked for the next 2 weeks, that is when mine finally goes in. I will report back (with pictures no less) on how it came out.

After that I will either recommend and name his shop... or I will tell people to stay away... lol.

As far as matching to a body panel, according to every body shop I have talked to there is a method that the paint suppliers use to match, using a digital camera and computers... something to that effect... Maybe this article covers it... http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...e/viewall.html
