66 STV goop

The temperature sensor that comes up from the STV is held in place on one of the metal lines that goes into the evaporator box with some sort of goop. it looks like the copper line was wrapped around the metal line and then a glob of this goop was applied to make it stay. does anyone know a source for that goop? technology seems to have moved on and this type of system isnt used any more

it is a wrap on insulation sold by any HVAC supply house or pay more at a Corvette repro house.

There was a copper strap around it also under the wrap in 65 for sure.

I call that stuff "tacky tape" and you should be able to get it locally, as stated above.

Sounds like you have an aftermarket expansion valve. Here's what the original part looks like under the wrap.

Try NAPA # TEM209491, or Carquest # 209491, or OLD AIR PRODUCTS # 21-0617. I believe LICS also sells it in the AC Section.

I don't recall why I went with after market rather than have my valve rebuilt. Just add it to the long list of questionable calls I've made on this project. I remember paying overnight freight charges a couple of years ago when I thought things were coming together and I'd be driving it in a week or so.

Thanks for the part #'s. NAPA knows me on sight. Over a year ago one of the workers there thought I was the father of his friend Nick - he yelled out "Hey Nick's dad". We talked and he said I looked just like him. Now when I go in, EVEYBODY says "Hey it's not Nick's dad" Kinda cute.

Is there a source for the clamp and hook end? I have one on my original valve but can't bring myself to cutting it off and scabbing it on my replacement valve

first of all, there is gas inside the capillary tube and the TXV won't work without it. So you can't transfer the bulb.

Old Air Products is selling a TXV with the curved bulb I believe. And they also sell the tacky tape.

Now the green clamp --never seen that repro'd. The guys that deal in vintage A/C systems might have an extra they'll sell you.

:iagree: For a used original expansion valve or the clamp I would call PacecarJeff. He lives in Florida and also has a store on Ebay. Google the name for other contact info, or ask me and I will find and provide.

Its called "Cork insulation tape" in the AC industry. Although GM appears to have had barrels of it, since the stuff Ive had to remove from 60's cars/trucks evap lines came off in gobs.
