The Making of my RetroMod Racer

Well guys, A chronicle of my build. I tried to buy one, but he wouldn't sell...So I guess I'll have to make one out of the one I have. Off we go. As found outside of Richmond,VA after a 30 year nap in a old homemade carport.

What are your plans for it?

M3MOTORSPORTS 11-07-2013 12:55 PM

I plan on combining these 4 inspirational cars into mine. These 3 are the reason my car is not going back to bone stock. I can't sleep at night just thinking about it!

Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't include Brian Hobaughs Big Red.

Will do Rob. I have a lot more pix. I figure I'll add 10 or 12 every day or so until they get caught up to current.

I'm leaning to that layout, but I'm going to use 2014 Luguna Blue lower and either '65 Nassau or '67 Marina Blue for the top, with either white or silver for the stripe. I believe the new Laguna is over silver so that may define the decision, but I'll do test panels with each base...stripe is going all the way down through the lower valance between the rear bumpers. My number and X/P in ghost on the door with my racing team name on the rear quarter also in ghost .

Wow, how did you find it, and what kind of money did you have to give ?
That's fairly close to me, and would have been interested myself

I found it on Craigslist. I won't say how much I paid, but I will say I was very happy with the purchase! It is a one owner car with 19,223 miles that had been parked since 1982, numbers matching.
I know you purists are gonna have a stroke over this, :hide: but hey, I tried to buy a shiitebox AND a real A/P or B/P racecar with no luck. If I had found a project car I would have saved this one for NCRS flight judging. I will keep the original parts with the car.

Looking forward to the build.

I'm just curious, why was it sitting so long with only 19,000 miles?

Vet65te 11-08-2013 03:51 PM

Glad to hear you're building it to suit you. This is just a stab in the dark but the one pic of the engine sorta looks like maybe it was a 300 horse 327 with the painted valve covers, small balancer and what might be the 2.5 exhaust manifolds? Any history on the car as to where it started out or where it has been since '65 before it's 30 year nap? Looking forward to seeing pics of your progress.

P.S. If I can ask...where around the RVA was this little beauty hiding?

The guy who owned it was a competative pro waterskier, who also had a young family. They travelled together in the warm months and he competed. I would assume there wasn't room in the Vette for 2 and a toddler with a ski boat in tow. He did give me pix of the car from when he got it and through the years from his family album. Also he had and gave me the original paperwork/purchase order from the Chevy dealer, service docs, etc. Unfortunately he developed a problem with his eyesight and was declared legally blind and couldn't drive the car any longer. As his son grew old enough to drive, he wasn't interested in Corvettes. This is why it sat. He owned the car from the time it was 2 months old until I purchased it.

More info in post below Mike. Also... yes it has the 327/300 engine. But it now will have a freshly worked over Cross-Ram DZ 302 that I've had sitting around in my garage since high school (between 72-76)!

Found the car in Petersburg,VA. Tom you can definately help me out in the retrofit of the car. The list I need to fill is pretty long. Any deals? P.M me if we can do something.

I know the Putsch Racing car (2nd pic) as I work there :) Its in Europe now but was amazing! The paint scheme looked better every time I saw it. The nice thing about that car and the 58 on our site (www.putschracing.com) is both have titles but are SVRA legal with logbooks. If you plan on resto modding, Id suggest you use 'period' componets vs going to an LS or something. The torqe thruts wheel with the large offset really make the first car stand out. You have TONS of options for modding but a 60's motor and beefed up trans with modern suspension is king in my book! Good luck and have fun!
