Which are right tires for 1971

Existing tires need replacement. They are 235/60/15. Book calls for 235/70/15.
Also can I think they said 255/70/15 fit with no problems.
I would like to go a little wide and the 255's are????
Any help.

The correct Tire Size for 71 is F70-15. According to this chart I found that is
equivalent to P205/70R15

I like 255/60/15's on the rear, but hated them on the front, had problems with wondering and rubbing on sharp turns. I now have 225/60/15's on the front, MUCH BETTER.

I run 245/60/15 BFG Radial TAs on my 72 with no problems whatsoever. Good tire and nice ride.

I was told the closest size to the F70's were 225-70's. I replaced GR60's on the 69 with the 225-70's and it was a night and day difference-so much so I never installed the PS setup I bought for the car. I'm going to run the same tire on the 72.

Actually the correct current day service replacement size is P215/70R15.

FYI....I have P255/60R15 Goodyears GTII on my '72 with no problems....

Note: Sig shows P245/60R15's that were on the car when I bought it. I've since changed to the 255's.

265/60/15s in rear and 235/60/15s in front. No problems.

Re: Which are right tires for 1971 (John D.)

I got my BFG Radial TAs from NTB a few years ago, and they said the book called for P225/70/15 so that's what I got. Now I'm sorry I didn't research it a little better because the 70s seem to "tall". When I replace them I'm going for 60s and probably wider too.

Correct and I run that size on my 70. For originality, find ones with raised white letters.

I agree that the wider tires wander more.

I have a 1971 corvette stingray and it currently has the BF Goodrich tires size P225/70R15 100S
should I keep that exact size or change size I really want the car to drive and ride good . Thank you !

I would like to see pictures of actual corvettes with P255/60R15 tires and also corvettes with P215/70R15 tires for comparison purposes.

Just look at the 1979 Corvette sales brochure for the L82 Vette - it came stock with P255/60R15 tires.

From the side, the two tires you mentioned will look the same - they are the same diameter within 0.10". The only difference is in the width: The 255's are 10" wide, and the 215's are 8.5" wide.

My '69 with BFG 255/60 R15's on rear, and I believe 225/70's on the front.........see sig pic.

Correct tires for a 1971 C3 were F70-15's. The equivalent of that in a radial tire is 215R70-15. But, folks like wider tires than that...and when you go 'wider', the tire diameter gets larger...and the speedo calibration goes whacko. 235R60-15's are nearly the same diameter as the F70-15; and 235 width tires are the widest that will ALWAYS have clearance to the frame and body parts in the front end of '68-77 cars. Many will accept 245's without rubbing; some will take 255's. Front end wheel wells were opened up in 1978, so '78-82 will take larger tires up front [and rear].

I run 225/70-15 rear & 215/70-15 front on my '72 Coupe. Rides and handles great!

will the stock rally wheels on 71 accept 255 wide tyres in the back? Or do they fit even wider tyres on stock wheels?
