need help with fuel injectors
 

Hi guys...i just was gifted a 1989 corvette convertable . However here is the rub. Its in the shop. One of the fuel injectors is out. The mechanic told me its a common failure with model...and will cost 2 grand to fix...i priced with another mechanic and he said same thing....i dont have 2 grand an am considering doing work myself. Here is question...can i put in cheaper plugs and what do you recomend...more interested in getting car running and out shop where it has been all winter, than restoring to original parts

2 grand ... for fuel injectors some thing is wrong you can buy a set for $300 or less and what does it take to install a morning?

Are you able to turn a wrench? If so, go to this webpage and order the rebuilt Bosch Design III for $189, the plenum gasket and fuel rail rebuild kit for $30, and the TPI diaphragm and spring kit for $49.95. This will replace and rebuild your entire fuel injector system for $270.00.

Even if you can't do your own wrenching and have to pay someone to do it, it should cut down on your costs dramatically.

Oh and order a copy of the FSM (factory service manual) for your year. It will be invaluable to work on the car either for you or your mechanic.

wow...thanks....i know I need injectors. and saw a YouTube tutorial and think I can do this...gonna study a few more and cross reference them with how to guild...is Childress book good? I know I need injectors.. And I know need gaskets on injectors...not sure what tpi diaphram and spring kit is

new to forums...im shocked at how quick and helpful you guys are... Is service manual better than Childress book

Yes..

The Chiltons and Haynes manuals are not very good since they try to cover all years in one repair manual. Get the FSM either on CD or in paper. The Haynes manual does have pretty good photos of the TPI fuel injection system and removal so you may want to get that in addition to the FSM. But you really need to get the FSM no matter what.

As for the diaphragm and spring - they are used to rebuild the Fuel Pressure Regulator (often referred to as FPR by many on the forums). If you are going to replace the injectors, it is best to rebuild the FPR and replace the fuel rail o-rings at the same time. This is because in order to replace the injectors you need to remove the plenum (and possibly the runners - I don't have a L98 engine in my '96). So you should do everything at the same time. :cheers:

Your mechanic probably doesn't want to do the work and quoted you a high estimate.

I had my previous 89 Vette's fuel injectors changed by my mechanic and he charged me $600 labor and I supplied the fuel injectors, which I bought from a member here on the forum for $175 a set.

$600 ? how much time is involved , I have never done this but I am guessing 4 hours.

Bull crap. Call Jon @ Fic injectors .The mechanic that services all my work trucks charged me $75 to install. roughley 400 out of pocket.

different yrs differents times to install. A good tech should be able to do the job in about 4 hrs. I would get this thing from the shop and give it a go by your self. contact Jon at fic he is a big help and has a install film on here. Haveing not done these before I would plan on 8 hrs just to give your self time and freedome to take a rest.

FIC injectors, only way to go, if you can turn a wrench you can replace injecttors on an '89. I did it in less than a day, took some extra time and painted and powder coated some parts

The difficult part on any maintenance that involves the upper half of an engine is the hidden bolts to remove parts. I replaced injectors on the same year car not to long ago, it sat for 4 years. One injector was causing it not to turn over. Anyway I don't remember the name of the special tip to remove the plunum, the one on the rear and front driver side is a pain. It is removing items to gain access is the hard part. It took be longs because I like to clean things before putting back on the car. Oh yeah, the owener got 32 psi accel injectors for 189.00 from summit.

There is no need to remove the runners on a 89 Corvette to replace the fuel injectors.. I did the injectors on my 89 in 3 hours using the instructions below... Once the plenum is removed , you have to disassemble the fuel rails, insert the new injectors, reassemble the fuel rails, replace the plenum..."One very important tip, use vaseline on all the O-rings as lube or you can damage them"....Everything else you read in the FSM is extra work that doesn't need to be performed....Below are the instuctions with pictures.....WW

When I owned my 89, I had all the ejectors replaced after market ejectors done at Chevy dealership, so you know they are charging top dollar, and they charged me with fuel filter replaced $900.00.

You have a stock engine - you don't need to get higher psi injectors. Get the proper ones from FIC - don't mess around. Bosch are probably the best that you can get. He cleans, refurbs and flow matches them. You are not going to do any better than that. You can even call Jon and he will tell you what you need if you are unsure. Get the injectors, fuel rail and plenum kit and the diaphragm and spring kit. If you don't go to FIC then you are just wasting time and money. He has probably helped thousands of car owners without a complaint. He stands behind his injectors and has the reputation to prove it. :cheers:
