C5 Owner's Manual Question

When we purchased our '98 a year ago, it came with a '97 owner's manual. Were there enough changes made in '98 to warrant the purchase of a new manual (or is the '97 good enough)?

John,
Sure do appreciate the detail and the C5 history. I miss our old '66, but we love the C5!!

Best regards and thanks for your prompt response,
Geoff

After the popular response that the Corvette received in 1997, GM knew that they had a winner on their hands. So, in 1998, they did not do much to the car but add two notable features; including the addition of the Active Handling System and the addition of a convertible model with a trunk to the vehicle line up for the first time since 1962!

Production numbers for the 1998 model year were up substantially over the 1997 model year. The total was 31,084 vehicles of which 19,235 were coupes and 11,849 were convertibles; for a total of 31 084 vehicles in 1998. In 1997, 9772 coupes were built.

Geoff, your Light Pewter Metallic version was one of 3,276 built in 1998.

You should be able to download a '98 manual from the gmpartshouse.com web site.

John,
Is the "Active Handling System" the same as the "Selective Real Time Damping" control system (SRTD) shown in the manual?

No, they are two different systems. The selective real time damping system is for the shocks. The active handling is:

Active Handling System (Option)
The optional Active Handling System is a computer
controlled system that helps the driver maintain
directional control of the vehicle in difficult driving
conditions. This is accomplished by selectively applying
any one of the vehicle’s brakes.

^ What he said.

However, more precisely, Geoff, see here.

1998 was not the first convertible model since 1962. What am I missing here?

1962 ? Got to be a typo !

Phanni 04-20-2014 10:44 AM

Maybe he meant convertible with a trunk.

Thanks for the info, guys..........I'm slowly getting educated on C5's. I had a Mid-Year for over 40 years, so that's all I really kept up on!!

Ooooooppppppsss. My bad. Phanni, you're right.

Post should read: "..................add two notable features; including the addition of the Active Handling System and the addition of a convertible model with a trunk to the vehicle line up..............."

My post has been subsequently amended to reflect the correction.
