What oil do you run? any failures??

Curious as to what oils everyone runs and if they have had any mechanical failures running that particular brand weight?
I switched from Mfg recommended brand & weight after I had a cam and lifter fail at 14k mi.
I currently run Amsiol synth 5-30 with no issues so far 17k on the Odo

Red Line 0W30 (winter), Red Line 5W30 (Summer)

No issues. There is a considerable increase in engine / valvetrain (I'm assuming) noise in the LS7 when I switch from 5w30 to 0w30. I'll be sticking with Red Line synthetics (I like the ester based approach) until I have my new heads checked at 10k miles and see where the wear is.

Mobil 1 for a long time, same thing had lifter/etc fail.

New motor has been amsoil zrod 10-30 after breakin with basic Pennzoil and has been good but that is only ~8k miles on it or so.

capevettes 05-09-2014 04:32 PM

Mobil 1 5W 30. 06Z, 20,000 miles. No issues. Oil changed every 3,000 miles. No track days. Stock except for B&B Bullet cat back exhaust.

Mobil 1 5w30. I'm about to drop in my updated 442ci LS7 since I lost the crank and two rods at the track. It was either a starvation problem (possible since I was on Hoosiers) or the oil thinned out way too much on a hot summer morning in AZ. I never looked at the oil temp when the failure occurred so I've always assumed it was starvation.

Just to feed the paranoia, I no longer run Mobil 1 in any of my cars.

Dominator 10w30 has from what I can tell the highest protection for race motors and that's what I use in mine and my last higher hp car

BlackshirtsZ06 05-09-2014 05:42 PM

Joe Gibbs LS30

forg0tmypen 05-09-2014 05:55 PM

Mobile 1 extended mileage with added zddp, 5w30. Its great oil and has served me well for the last...few miles...

carpe dm 05-09-2014 06:37 PM

Mobil 1 in many Corvettes and several 100K miles, over thirty years. NO problems.

Pennzoil Platinum 5w30. Only have about 1500 miles on the oil though.

Based on previous posts, I think you should rephrase the question to read:

What kind of oil do owners of highly modified, racing oriented LS motors, use?

My belief is that once you change something as in increasing the valve spring pressure or specific engine output, you have taken the motor out of the street level oil and into more of the racing type oils. After that, is it intended for drag race or road race type driving.

Basic oils today, and I consider Mobil1 to be a basic oil, are based on the OEM specifications, output and GENERAL usage of the vehicle. The forces at play in the crank/rod mating is different between stock Vs modified and can actually squeeze out the oil between the bearing and the rod journal if the oil is too thin, for what ever reasons. Same goes with the cam lobe to roller lifter interface.

Point..... the C7 Z51 uses 5w30 from the factory. Chevrolet released a Track Prep Guide in which it says to change the oil to Mobil1 15w50. Which tells me that in stressed conditions, 5w30 doesn't cut it.

Can you explain further on failure. Like to know if it was modded. Tracked. New heads or valvetrain ect. Ive learned alot, only after listening to details of failures. Oil from time of purchase 5k mi. was RP HPS 5/30, i recently switched to red line 10/40. Currently at 10k and new lower end blower build.7k was on old lifters and cam at time of 1st H/C. One ctsv lifter and new cam pics.

Glen

Excellent post and very interesting about GM recommendation for 15w50 for track use. VERY TELLING !!

It is exactly these reports of lifter and cam failures along with my regular track duty on my DD that I recently switched from Mobil 0w40 to Redline 10w40

I'm not clear on what you are saying, can you clarify please. Did you also have cam/lifter failure on stock motor or modded while running Redline 10w40 ???????
