IAT2's The Good...the Bad...and UGLY
As some of you know I do alot of data logging and this might be helpful to someone....
As alot of you know cooling is the killer on these cars... I've done alot of different setups to get a nice combo... I've seen alot of the norm setups that are ok for mild street use but if you want the power that you paid to get and drive your car hard roll after roll after roll racing...even drag racing if you don't heat the clutch too bad.... These were logged at Chicago Halfmile event Lets start with the UGLY:eek: This is a stage 4 ZR package just done... Owner not knowing his car is in this state until end of race...Dashlogic is an awesome gadget to have. http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psvnrrp1av.jpg This is 1st gear...... http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pswovidyoa.jpg 2nd gear.....:eek: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps0foutibb.jpg 3rd gear...:eek::eek: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psqf8i4f58.jpg 4th gear....:eek::eek::eek: :leaving: I brought the car back to my house and wanted to get blower lid to see if its was okay..... Which turned out he was very lucky... There was some oil build up in the blower and he had a catch can installed but I didn't see were it was plumbed into.... Had TurboJoe from Straightline make and expansion tank and do intercooler brick mod for safety ... :yesnod: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psejl5hlj8.jpg Also shipped 1 to my good friend at ScogginDickey:thumbs: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psujchbtjv.jpg Heres it installed After going over his system we replace ALL the cheap flexible heater hose with strong push lock hose... We found 4 kinks in his system. Below is an example http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps4utorqyi.jpg Here we found the lpe shroud was pushed down on it crammed in the corner:crazy2:....And this shroud also choke the crap from fresh air getting into the motor if you look at the pics above in lower graph on IAT:ack: Also the intercooler system flow pattern needs to be correct.. You only need to take of wheels and inner fender well to install these. Stock system holds little over a gallon of coolant....And with reservoir your close to 3 gallons filled properly... Why do people put on a bigger radiator? More capacity for cooling? Same theory.. So the Bad...... Here is a fresh build Stage 4 package ZR1.... A quick log from a 3rd and part 4th gear pull..... http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psvxfubozo.jpg Imagine what this would look like if he did a full 1st thru 4th pull:crazy: Now he knows why a basic Z06 can hang with him....... This guys is getting a whole need intercool system setup.... Now the GOOD..... Chicago Halfmile Here a log from my car...... http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pslcoxgatp.jpg Top of 2nd:yesnod::yesnod: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psjldlroyf.jpg Top of 3rd:yesnod::yesnod::yesnod: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psamzxddnr.jpg Top of 4th:yesnod::yesnod::yesnod::yesnod: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pstyfvzixu.jpg Top of 5th :yesnod::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo::woohoo: And another major factor you need is RECOVERY time....As you can see from the orange graph this drops just as fast and that's a major factor for these cars. No need to go and park for an hour so it can cool down... http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...szdtoiuyt.jpeg So make sure you get your cooling system in check and not just for a cold 4th gear dyno pull..... http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psql3wbkg2.jpg This is how your temps should look after idling for 11 minutes I hope this benefits some of you and alot that I/we GKZR1/Whatcop already helped:thumbs: Get a Dashlogic its an easy way to monitor your temps |
Great Data logging Drew! Thanks for the help with my car also...same scenario basically--well not as bad IAT2's, but now the cooling is much better with your help. I got the new heat exchanger installed and what a difference. That expansion tank from straightline works wonders too.. :)
IAT1 202 and 302 IAT2 temps is insane. Never seen temps sky rocket that high... He's timing went all the way down to 8 degrees and lost all that power. Ohh... check out the injector duty cycle.... I think he needs ID850's too. I was the same at 110% and now only hitting 50% with upgraded injectors. |
those tanks are coming with a bleeder now?

Thanks for the informative post Drew, really appreciate it.
" this shroud also choke the crap from fresh air getting into the motor" Could you expand upon this ? Other than the expansion tank, pushlock hoses & brick plates, what else have you changed ? Pump ? Heat exchanger ? Cheers, Rob |
Now if only straightline would EVER respond to messages....... I keep trying to get them to shutup and take my money to no avail...
Drew, I'll PM you! |
This is the absolute best, informative, non-biased, altruistic post I've EVER seen on this forum. And I've been on this corvette forum since 2005. Wow, I did not think those IATs were achievable in a ZR1 especially at your power levels, Drew. Just awesome!!! ZR1 IAT issues.........well PROBLEM SOLVED!
:woohoo: No wonder this car ran 175+ at the standing half mile (even with a possible bad spark plug!). I wonder what a stock ZR1 would do around the ring with a setup like this? |
awesome work:thumbs:
on a side note, does anyone know how to log IAT 2's in the DashCommand iPhone app via ELM 327 OBDII wifi system---I can only see IAT 1's? |
Great post Drew, I still cant believe he didn't melt the bricks but glad it worked out. I hope he brings the car back in October for the next 1/2 mile! I still cant wrap my head around those other guys thinking the high IAT's weren't any big deal. :crazy2:

I got to get me a dash logic... It's just the base version that displays that on the computer?

That's hptuners in the pics

Great info!

Althought i dont have a ZR1, I do run a pd blower and this info is fascinating.
Very interesting and good info in those logs. I am assuming in the first ones the wideband is not working because it seems very lean for that boost. Incredibly high IAT's. One thing I am curious of it why would the IAT1 be so high compared to the ambient ? I get that the bigger tank and other changes would help IAT2 considerabley, but are the changes that drop IAT1 so much? |

On the first to example they had the lpe shroud on there car and it really chokes it up.. On my car I didn't like how the filter sucks the HOT air off the radiator and preheats the blower temps so I came up with Call me crazy but it works:D |
Definitely crazy but a good crazy. Not psycho ex girlfriend crazy. More like OCD crazy.

so you plumbed yours to go through the heat ex then sit in both expansion tanks then through the single cooler and into the pump then bricks? interesting
currently mine is reserviour heat ex pump bricks repeat. |

currently mine is reserviour heat ex pump bricks repeat. You don't want your pump trying to suck thru the heat exchanger or from the bricks...The first car in log was sucking from the bricks and that's what probably burnt it out, it would not circulate any water.. That first car with 302* had a 20gpm pump and was burnt out and it was basically new... I picked up a new one and did a test with 2 five gallon pails...1 filled other empty... I primed the inlet side with water stuck it in full pail and turned it on and it would not suck any water.. and we tried several ways....Its like sucking thru a straw that has a crack in it... I called the manufacture and said it needs to be pressure primed and a constant load or static pressure to stay primed so if you get an air pocket sucking thru your h/e:ack:....There pump also states Do Not run dry more than a few seconds.... My stock pump is still kicking ass:D Have the routing is definitely a key role... And make sure to get ALL the air pockets out.....Keep in mind Im no engineer this is just a lot of testing and what I found to work best.. Good luck and cant wait to see the results from your car:cheers: |

Great write up Drew, I still can't get over the difference, I knew your set up would work, but it's impressive how effective it is.
