1980 interior questions

Fellow late C3 owners. I'm doing some interior and door panel work on my 1980 (I swear Bubba didn't use the same screw twice in there...), and had a few questions.

Is this molded area on the left driver footwell just structural? Is it supposed to be carpeted over or exposed?

What is this part directly under the steering column? Not for the courtesy light is it?

Finally, on the kickpanels, is the carpet supposed to go down all the way to cover the bottom trim area pointed to or should the lower plastic margin be exposed?

Thanks for any knowledge/assistance offered.

One more question. Under my carpet (which has the multicolor thread felt underlayment, there is an additional layer- it's sort of black, rubbery material bonded to more of the same underlayment felt. Is this stock? Looks like the PO had a heater core leak, so I may be in for some nasty surprises when I pull all this up...

Tarry mat bonded to the Jute or compressed dryer lint as I call it is original.
New replacement carpet I'm laying down has the jute bonded to it already.
I'll check the original carpet tomorrow and see if it has jute bonded to it or if it just layed on the tarry sound deadener
I dont know what the part under the column is.
Every thing at the driver footwell gets covered in carpet.
Kick panels get fully covered

That thick 'tar-paper' is from the factory and is meant as a sound-deadener wherever you find it. (usually on the floor/firewall areas)

Foot rest for your left foot.

Under the carpet.

Not the courtesy light. I did a quck flip through the 1980 AIM without seeing it, but it's probably in the AIM.

The panels are carpeted. Your pic is of the left kick panel and looks like regular wear from entering and exiting the car. Is there the same wear pattern on the passenger's side?
