Questions about change CAM but do headers later
I just recently got my heads fixed (08Z) with SS exhaust valve, and bronze guide. I do want to do the cam mod since the heads are out. (save some labor money)
But my budget is limited now, so I cant do the long tube headers at the same time, but will do it around Christmas. I know cam will perform better with long tubes, and yes Stock headers and cat will have a larger back pressure, but is it going to hurt the car? or I could do this step by step? maybe a mild tune will be helpful? any suggestions and advice will be appreciated Heads are ported as well as the TB and intake manifold. and has a KN CAI Thanks Frank |
Go for it. It's not going to hurt the car......just leave a few horses to be found latter. A tune will be appreciated by your car.

Lots of people running an aftermarket cam with stock exhaust manifolds, no worries with that. A cam will require a tune. You mention the heads were just redone...not sure what springs you wnet with, but that will dictate what cam you can run based on compatabiliy.

Thanks for the help |
I would get a custom cam spec'd to your car.
Friend has a cam/stock exhaust car. Still makes 550rwhp and runs really really good. Since you are in Florida, just call up Matt@FSP. He will be able to help. |
where did you get your head work done in in florida? im in destin and I don't know of anyone too close or even a few hours away.
I want to do a cam as well. |
I put in a mild cam at the same time I did my heads this past spring. Stock exhaust manifolds and intake, made 510whp on a mustang dyno and drives just fine (after tuning). My tuner said I should be around 550whp once I put an intake and headers on.

I put down 550 on a mustang dyno with stock exhaust. No issues but I do wonder what headers would do...

Dyno numbers are deceiving though so don't read into it too much...
Everyone has a favorite, but I'm gonna toss my vote in for EPS. Have Geoff spec a cam for your car and your needs. It may save you money in the long run...you wont be changing out cams one after the other. Good luck |

I second this. I had a cam that made superior numbers, but the cam I have now drives SO MUCH BETTER! Losing 25 HP never felt so good. The car is far better to drive, really very smooth.
