Anyone ever notice this?

Today I accidentally popped off the cover of my auto shift knob and I noticed some dots and with a closer look there was a grid! Left side labeled 07 and went through the years until my year, 11. Over the top it went 1-12 assuming the month of the year. Not the best picture but I couldn't get my camera to focus.

Probably just a casting or production date to refer to when needed.

Holes but not all the way through the plastic so I called them dots

Hameister 11-21-2014 02:55 PM

I focused it a little better, maybe that will help.

Probably some kind of identification in case of a recall.

TxLefty 11-21-2014 03:20 PM

Did you try connecting the dots?

Hameister 11-21-2014 03:38 PM

It's an ancient form of pentagram.

You take the month and year in which your car was made, cross reference the stamping number on your transmission case, then divide by the numerical value of the grid dot which references your trim package.

Red08 11-21-2014 03:53 PM

Interesting, but no, I have never seen that before.

Actually, here is what it is...The sum of the square roots of any two sides of an isosceles triangle is equal to the square root of the remaining side.

Hmmm, I dunno, your explanation doesn't make any sense to me.

Now, watch! There will be a rash of people pulling apart their shift nobs to see what theirs show.
