My gosh, what an excellent write up! Worked like a charm and was way easy. Putting a small long life incandescent bulb in parallel with the high beam LED - perfect solution and no chopping into factory wiring. This is the beauty of a community. Thanks a million!

LED Headlights & Foglight Solution
Hi, I am new to the Corvette Forum and I came across your article. I have a 1994 LT-1 C4. From reading your article it appears this will work on my vette. Is this correct? Do you have to

After putting off doing this mod for a while now (bought the parts I needed in April of last year), I finally installed it. I had been running the LED headlights without the mod.
Instead of modifying the lightbulb, I found a headlight wiring harness on that worked great. Got the Dorman bulb socket from AutoZone or O'Reilly's (it was for a Chrysler) and I had spare 194 and 168 bulbs from when I converted my interior lights to LEDs (do this, you won't be sorry, just make sure the map lights are bi-directional LED's). I tried the 194 bulb first, since it was smaller and would be less exposed. It appeared to work at first, but would not stay working. If I had my lights on with the fog, the high beam indicator wasn't illuminated. When I turned on the high beams, the indicator stayed on until I turned off the lights completely. Switching the the 168 bulb fixed this and it appears to be working correctly. I secured the harness with zip ties to the back of the housing, where I had previously secured the extra wiring harness that the new headlights have. The original has a direct connection to the bulb that you plug directly into. |
Just upgraded to LEDs and need to this mod.
Don't like the resistors as they get way too hot for my liking. Wanted to do the relay ground mod but can't find the relay. FSM says location is: on bottom RH side of I/P. I'm thinking it's near the center console OR would that be over on pass side? Anyone actually locate this fog light relay? At this point the light bulb mod would have been far easier! |

Found the fog light relay but there was no I could get to it w/o taking a lot more of the dash apart.
Decided to do the 168 bulb mod. Not quite working normal, Low and high beams works as they should with the fogs off. With low beams on, turn on fogs makes low beam go to high beam. Any ideas on what's wrong? |

That's exactly what mine did before I did the 168 bulb mod, sounds like your mod wasn't successful for some reason. When you switch to high beams the 168 bulb should light up, does it? If not, maybe a bad bulb? Or double-check the wiring connections to make sure everything's making good contact.

Also, I haven't left the office during daylight and fair weather since I bought the car last week, which has inhibited my ability to make this change. I was able to install LEDs without any issues. Big thanks to Circuit Doctor for putting the guide together

Any updates specific to 1989? I would prefer if the fog light switch was just entirely independent.

1989 is the first year that the fogs go off in hi-beam. The 1989 has a one year only fog light wiring scheme that isn't used any other year. Have fun figuring out what is happening after installing LED headlights in an 89. The Circuit Doctor mod above for the 90-96 won't do squat for the 89. Nothing needs to be done in an 84-88, so those guys won't know. The 89 mod isn't difficult to accomplish, it just isn't intuitive.
