500 mile oil change via dealer or yourself?
 

Are most of you having the dealer do it, because your lazy and or its free, or are you doing it yourself? I always do my own oil changes(Red Line ester based synthetics)but may let the dealership do this one because it is free. Can't make my mind up. Out of warrenty and its a no brainer, but while warrenty is in effect its nice to know all will be covered...lol I've considered letting the dealership do the oil change, document it, and then drive car home and drain oil into some clean containers and use in my pickup trucks. Then put my trusted Red Line in the Z06. (my wife thinks I'm crazy)

I will have the dealer do it. On a side note, I will let them do all the changes because (1) it's free and (2) I want Chevy to have the records that I changed the oil as needed so there are no questions should I have an engine issue for warrantee

I would let the dealer do it for the simple reason that I saw another one of your threads where you mentioned your A8 is shifting a little rough on the 1-2 part-throttle upshift.

Since GM has a reflash for the A8 PCM that the dealer can do, I'd have them do that while they change the oil.

Maybe your trans isn't doing this anymore... but my $.02 if it is.

Otherwise... I'm like you, I do all my own routine maintenance, and prefer it that way. :thumbs:

Since it is so important to get the break-in oil out of there at 500 miles, I would have the dealership do it so that its documented.

I did mine myself and put in magnetic drain plugs. I had an appointment at my local dealer but we got 2' of snow and I was bringing the car to Florida that week..

I change it myself:

1. Don't have a ton a faith when the oil change lube crew do it. There have been a few horror stories on the forum.

2. Allows me to look the underside of the car over while it is draining. Every once in a while you will find something wrong or loose and avoid bigger problems down the road. Not sure the lube crew at the dealer pays much attention.

3. As far as documenting the oil changes, if you reset the oil monitoring system, On Star has your history for all your oil changes.

Where did you get your magnetic drain plugs? Great idea!

If you do it yourself, save the receipts!

Your local auto part store should have them. They are pretty common.

I would do it myself. Too many horror stories about the dealer screwing up something. :cheers:

Sadly this is so true. It is amazing that GM lets the dealers sell these cars and some dealers have no clue about changing the oil in a dry sump vehicle. :thumbs:

i hope that you have a better result than i did. i spent many hours with some parts cost undoing the damage they did. ( see my oil change disaster post for more info )

if i ever have a dealer do another oil change in warranty, i will ask to speak with the person doing the work in advance.

It was a shock when I found out it takes 10 quarts! That's one expensive oil change. (Didn't take it to the dealer.)

I had a very reputable dealer do mine as I was on the road home from the NCM. I also had them install magnetic drain plugs I purchased from Power Slut.com. I will have my four future (free) oil changes done by my local dealer too. IMHO, doing it myself is like throwing away $100.+. I jack up my car when I get it home to inspect what has been done is done properly, inspect and wipe down the undercarrage and if I were to find any discrepencies, I would take it back to the dealer. I'm as anal as the next guy, but I'm too cheap to not take advantage of free oil/filters. Not to mention, I don't have to deal with the used drain oil either.:yesnod:

I posted the question on here as to my local area. A couple of people responded who had work done at my local dealer and referred them. If you use a dealer, do what you can to find out if they have a dedicated Corvette tech who is trained on the Z06. Mine did.

I was also able to watch him do the work from large windows in the service desk area. They also had no problem with me walking out to the tech twice to talk to him.

That to me is a good dealership for service. Got the PDR re-programmed at the same time. All done while I waited. He had the jacking pucks. I brought mine just in case.

Happy to say

I was so pleased with the service they provided for my C7 (which I did not purchase from them) I ordered my Z06 with them, and purchased a Colorado. It is nice to have a good local dealership .

I did the 500 mile change myself. I took pictures of the process, and reset the oil life monitor. I had purchased the oil and filter for my '14 months before so I don't have a receipt....but I doubt it will be an issue.

I may have the dealership do the next oil changes. I'm sure they know what they're doing, but I'm extremely particular about this car as most of us are.

I just gave them year,make,and model and he looked it up. The same as '14 stingray I believe.

I have a great situation here. My dealership has a Corvette specialist that does all the Vette work. I have spoken with him at length and he knows his stuff! They give me the royal treatment in that ONLY the Vette specialist is allowed to touch or drive my car AND I am allowed to enter the work area and watch him do the work. I couldn't ask for more.
