6 speed automatic transmission
 

Why is the automatic a four speed and the manual a six speed? Why dont they make a six speed automatic transmission?

As a gross generalization, the planetary gearset in the automatic lends itself to a specific number of ratios; planet carrier held=1st, sun gear held=2nd, two gears held=3rd, 4th usually an overdrive. Adding gears means adding a planetary gearset and much more widgetry.

The technology simply hasnt progressed quite that far yet.

New Mercedes have a 5speed auto now, and the Audi's have a new automatic with no gears at all. It wont be long before GM builds a new automatic with more gears.

Not long at all; GM makes the 5 speed auto for BMW's: http://www.gm.com/automotive/gmpower.../5l40_main.htm

Very little torque capacity though.

The new C6 will have more the 4 gears in a auto.

I read some time ago that the C5 was going to have a 5 speed auto. So now I suppose the C6 might get it.

Just another reason not to buy a Bimmer with an automatic :rolleyes:
