Make your rear CCM rotor lighter

I noticed our stock rear CCM is heavier than larger front CCM a while back. The reason is that rear CCM use heavy steel hat for parking brakes. RB brakes make a light weight aluminum hat for our rear CCM with steel lining to retain parking brake function. I decided to give it a try since I will be putting CCM back on for ABS tuning. Once installed the whole rear CCM assembly will be lighter than front CCM.

Here is the install DIY and will demonstrate the weight difference

Stock rear CCM and light weight RB hat and mounting hardware

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...ff6400709e.jpg

steel ring insert on RB light weight hat for hand brake

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...dbea5ccd17.jpg

RB light weight hat is slightly thicker than OEM so custom H type bobbins supplied by RB for proper fitting

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...5932ef8892.jpg

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...83c2fec8b4.jpg

weight in of OEM rear CCM - about 16 lbs each and 3 lbs heavier than larger from CCM

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...da57e9a3d3.jpg

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...7ca25251aa.jpg

RB light weight hats are about 3 lbs and OEM hat is about 6.9 - 7 lbs so weight saving is about 4 lbs each hat

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...05c4d3f436.jpg

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...ae2e055c81.jpg

OEM H type bobbins (10 for each rotors) are about the same weight as RB H type bobbins - about 0.5 lbs total

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...bdf1e5070d.jpg

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...5c80c5ef86.jpg

Amazing light weight rear CCM by itself is 8.35 lbs!

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...ea5355525a.jpg

OK, now let's remove the hats. Secure the center screw from the back with a wrench and use 8 mm socket to loosen the bolt on top of the H bobbin. Clean the thread and bolt if you plan on reusing them

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...d9a558b569.jpg

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...e17b2b3be6.jpg

Put the H type bobbins in the center hat and mate with CCM rotor

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...c4a17de296.jpg

Insert the screw and gently tighten the bolts. You may need to secure the screw from the back while tightening and take care not to damage the CCM in the process. I progressively tighten each bolt alternating from opposite sides before applying final torque of 84 in-lbs as demonstrated by diagram below. In this case we have 10 bolts total

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...ff6d1f221e.jpg

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...4a05a915ee.jpg

I use the highest temperature thread lock I can find - 450 F

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...943ed21605.jpg

Now the weight in for RB light weight rear CCM which are 12.12 lbs and 12.25 lbs compare with OEM 16.01 lbs and 16.16 lbs so 3.89 lbs and 3.91 lbs weight saving

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...5d5fdd1703.jpg

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...351fba1459.jpg

Each OEM rear CCM rotor have a minimum weight etch on the hat. Take note of the current excessive weight from minimum (my case they are 82 gm and 83 grams) and subtract that from the new RB CCM weight to get the the new minimum weight of each rotor. I etch the new minimum weight on the RB hat shown below

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.cor...b2aca3f23a.jpg

Now both side are done and they are nice and light. This is a quick mod if you are looking to gain a slightly quicker step on the track. Will install on the car soon and track test coming up in couple weeks

Great DIY post!

Thank you.

Very cool write-up! This is something to look into for sure.

Any issue with balance / vibration?

Can you share the approximate cost of the hats and hardware?

The only downside I see is the color of the coating..

Pretty cool writeup. What did the RB hats run?

glad you guys find the write up interesting :)

I don't have the market price for the light weight hat since it's a new product from RB. You can contact them directly for pricing and availability information if interested. I am sure it will be listed on their website soon http://www.racingbrake.com/

Cool, another 8~lbs of unsprung rotating weight off the car. It is mounted very close to the hub, so its not as beneficial as 8lbs off a tire or anything, but still, really awesome!

very good point. Any weight loss will help and less total weight will also help with shock and suspension transition/movement

Looking forward to your feedback after use!

Installed the lighter weight CCM rear rotors with RB hat and fitment was right on.

A view of the RB light weight iron rear rotor parking brake drum section from the back vs CCM with RB light weight hat - both fit really well

Did track test this past Friday at the tortuous 5 miles Thunderhill and the RB light weight rear CCM hat perform really well without issue. Pick up acceleration is definitely sharper and brisk. Very happy with the added performance

Hello, Does anyone have a stock set of bobbins they would sell?

c5racr1 01-29-2017 09:40 AM

How do you compare the carbon brakes vs. the steel brakes for track use?

BudUK 02-15-2018 11:04 AM

Hello all,
apologies to drag up this thread again.
I hoping somebnody can help me out.
I have a set of Carbon Ceramics off an Aston Martin DBS V; the brembo CC are the same as the Corvettes.
The front rotors as you are aware are held to the bell with "H" bobbins, I am desperatly trying to find a set of the bobbins; I require 20 in total of the standard ones.
Can you help at all ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards
Daryl Smith

We have not had luck with this. Brembo makes the hardware but the OEM parts are kept separate from the aftermarket ones so even if they make the same ones which you would think they do it is difficult to verify. They are proud of the price as well.

Hi Ken,
they are happy to sell new rotors /discs though.
I can have them made of course , this is the plan at the moment but I would rather not put my engineer through such a laborious task as he is making me something else at the moment.
I notice in this thread, RB looks to have made some for the OP ? Perhaps they are able to obligue on this ocassion.
I am sure they must be out there in the wild somewhere ?

EDIT: perhaps people have soon worn out CC or broken that the bobbins can be salvaged from ?

Side question: What is the deck width of your car trailer? Are you able to open the door and squeeze out with the fender wells in the way?

Awesome car btw...
