cooling issue or not??

Hey guys quick question.
I have a 2008 m6(z51 if that matters) with the ecs 1500 kit, alky control meth kit, headers, x-pipe(no cats) dewitts rad and fan setup.
My question is about the coolant temp. Mine seems to run just over 200 while driving and gets up to @230-235 if im stuck in traffic with out side temp @80-90 or so. I know that seems to be in the safe range on the gauge but seems a little high to me. anyone have the same or similar set up that could tell me if this is normal or not??
If this has been discussed a bunch im sorry....im new..lol

Thanks
Andrew

Thats pretty much what a stock car runs, and stock car doesn't even kick on fans on high until 230+. It is fine and won't hurt anything.

yep. where mine sits 2 but in low to mid 90s temps in the florida heat.

Don't know if your kit already includes it but a lower temp thermostat helps a bit

Streetk14 08-13-2015 09:54 PM

While those temps may not hurt anything, my A&A car never ran that warm. Even in ~90 degree temps, it would stay in the 180's at a steady freeway cruise. This was with a Dewitts radiator, 160 t-stat, and stock fan w/ modified settings.

If those temps you're seeing are "normal", then my conclusion would have to be that the ECS intercooler isn't nearly as efficient for engine cooling as the A&A version. Or maybe you are running the stock thermostat. If so, 195-200 degree cruising temps would be normal. I think the ECS kit comes with a 160 t-stat, though.

What are you ECT's with 90* temps and bumper to bumper traffic?

Actually, the oem fan kicks in at 199* at only 15%. At 225* they are maxed out at 90%. Much prefer a more aggressive fan desired % to keep ECT's down in stop and go traffic.

I live by the coast, so that isn't something I really ever have to deal with. Although it has been 90+ the last few days, that's pretty rare.

My experiences with high ambient temperatures in that car were mostly on road trips through the deserts or valleys at higher speeds (i.e. with good airflow). In those situations, the thing would run surprisingly cool.

Right before I sold that car, I took it out to a 1/2 mile event in the desert. Ran it all morning, then cruised back home in the early afternoon heat. About 80 miles of that was through inland areas where it was right around 90 degrees. I had the A/C cranking with temps stable in the low 180's the whole way.

I certainly do believe these cars can use a fan upgrade if you get stuck in slow moving traffic and high temperatures often. Thankfully, I don't really have that need.

I think we need a sticky at the top for all these threads about cooling. Everybody seems to freak out once it's over 200℉.

Indeed... it's funny because this topic will die in another few months.. then come spring 100 threads pop up again.

I'm not sure why so many people think 220 is borderline catastrophic

It does seem that the brushless fans are a really good upgrade for those that need more airflow though. Everyone who has one has said good things

How can you possibly conclude what is or isn't efficient when you had an aftermarket radiator, and you do not live in a hot climate area.

DOUG @ ECS 08-14-2015 01:09 PM

OP, things to look for;

It's very common for the wire connection near the fan to have high resistance and burn up. Before it completely fails, or even if it has not failed at all, it is still a point of high resistance, that is going to slow the fans down.
Check that connection and repair the wire as necessary.

Fans can be a little tricky because it's not like they have an RPM gauge on them. If they are spinning at 50%, they are still on and working as far as any owner or tech would know.

Another easy step to increase fan speed is to remove the fan module and install good quality fan relays instead. You will loose the low rpm function of the fans however, they will either be on or off, but they will spin noticeably faster. Thus keeping the temps down. The stock fan module never gives the fans full vehicle voltage ever.

From there adding an aftermarket radiator is a huge help, and aftermarket fans the next from there. Or visa versa really, they both make a big difference in cooling.

I hope that helps.

Unreal 08-14-2015 02:00 PM

After having an A&A kit and ECS kit, I noticed ZERO difference in cooling between the two.

Maybe all the A&A parts I'm swapping onto my car next week will make it run cooler, but I doubt that.

schpenxel 08-14-2015 02:12 PM

A&A parts?

While my house might be a mile from the beach, California has some hot areas. Miss the part where my observations were while driving through the desert? That's where all the airstrip events I've ran at are located, and I drive my car there.

The aftermarket radiator IS relavant because that's what the OP has. See where I was drawing one of my possible conclusions from?

Just to be clear, just swapping from a Dallas Direct drive to A&A direct drive. No ECS parts are going away. Just mixing and matching what I think is the best of the best.

schpenxel 08-14-2015 06:21 PM

Ah gotcha. Why A&A over the cartek version?

Thread officially hijacked.

Unreal 08-14-2015 07:06 PM

Because I like Tacos.

Andy is good dude and makes quality stuff. Never dealt with cartek.
