Probably the most common system used was the Kustom Headers made GM header/side pipes, and the Hooker header side pipes, that were a copy of the "factory" ones. They were/are readily available and reasonably priced. Prior to the GM header side pipes coming out around 1968, most racers were using regular under car headers, with pipes exiting under the frame, just in front of the rear wheels.
Stahl made fantastic headers, that were very popular with both privateer and pro racing teams. In the 60's and 70's, Stahl made all of the headers for Penske Racing, and they custom made the headers we used on the Trans-Am Camaros I crewed on in the 80's. Kerry Hitt of Advanced Composites, bought all of Stahl's manufacturing equipment, and Corvette header patterns from Jere Stahl, about 2-3 years ago. Jere is semi-retired, but still helps out occasionally with the manufacture of his headers I believe. Advanced Composite Products is or was, a Forum Supporting Vendor. Duntov makes an over the frame header side pipe system, that's very popular with vintage racers. I don't think they make a street version of it though, and it's very expensive, with a starting price of around $4000! You also have to cut a portion of the side fender away, in order to use their system. The first below picture is a vintage racer built by Duntov, that uses their over the frame header side pipes. The next 6 pictures are of Corvettes that raced here in the northeast from around 78-85. The last picture, the white #70, is a car I crewed on in the early 80's. It is a true L-88, that was a race car it's whole life. Babe initially raced the car quite successfully in SCCA AP, garnering a number of wins. In the early 70's, he started racing the car in IMSA GT, and raced it in the Daytona 24 hour, Watkins Glen 6 hour, Pocono, Lime Rock, Road Atlanta and many other IMSA races. Babe sold the car in the 70's to someone else from the Philly area, who raced it a couple years, and then sold it too. The car was found in the midwest somewhere about 10 years ago and restored. The last I heard, the car belonged to Tom O'Brian, of Pittsburg PA. He'd vintage raced it a few times, mainly at Beaver Run. I don't know if he still has the car or not. |

When i swapped the 383 for the 454 we both had side pipes but he wrapped his in that ugly wrap, but not burning my leg and I can even touch the pipe I grew to love the ugly wrap, it does look very "race car"

yea those on the green car defenitly look like hookers thats what i have on my sb and the sidepipes for bb and sb are the same only headers are diferent i found a realy nice used set of raw steel ones and had them ceramic coated for 400 total cost was like 700
