using a battery tender with the hood closed
 

Just wondering if anyone ever had a problem with vapors leaving a battery when a tender is on a car with the hood closed and a car cover on? Just a thought as i have usually left my hood open when on the tender over the summer months but would like to cover it this winter. I know i have noticed a lot of vapors when using a battery charger in the past but perhaps the tender chg rate is too low to have the same effect. I normally disconnect my batterys on my older cars but understand that is not advisable on the C6's. The car sits in a heated garage for at least 5 months over the winter. Sorry for the long winded post :D

i always leave the hood cracked; I plan to run the cable out under the bottom and close the hood and cover it...

Also, I have seen people use those cigarette lighter hookups to charge the battery on the car, so I would imagine that would be fine as well.

I leave mine with hood propped (to route cable out) and cover on. Never had an issue.

I keep my hood closed with a car cover on the car all the time. Mine stays under a carport but I've never had a problem with any kind of vapors.

Mine sits with the hood closed and cover on all winter, no problems ever.

I use the cigarette lighter adapter with the hood and door closed. BTW, there is no problem disconnecting the battery for a few months. C6 is no different than any other car with the battery disconnected.

Might be a good idea to leave the hood open a bit if you connect it directly to the battery. You're not as likely to drive off with it hooked up that way. :)

Have always left the hood cracked open and never use a cover when the battery tender is hooked up.

thanks for the replies, looks like i'll give it a try, maybe lay a light cloth over the battery and clamps just in case

C6 is no different than any other car with the battery disconnected.

E V Rose. thought i read that the computer loses it's setting and the side windows need resetting etc., just want to avoid any hassles

Yes, you will need to reindex the windows but that takes less than 10 seconds to do. You dont lose anything else.

I have the battery tender hooked up, hood closed and car covered all winter in the garage and have never had a problem or smelled any vapors. I also made a small sign saying "Battery Tender" which I leave on the steering wheel for those rare winter days when I can (and do) drive the Corvette.

Use my battery tender ever since new, in 2009. Always connected when the car is not in use through an external connection at the front grill. Always with the hood closed, and most often under a car cover. Closed hood and covered car not a problem with a tender, but if using a battery charger, then venting is probably recommended.

The hood is not anywhere near air tight...its' position will have no effect on the battery or the tender.:thumbs:

I'm in with the cigarette lighter, across the seat and out the drivers door with the cable in the divit in the sill {almost like it was put there} and shut the door.

fyi: I saw a newer version of this brand of battery tender at Costco for $39.95.

This is what I have been doing for these last few years using same CTEK tender and with hood down but not locked. I run the cord out of crack of hood.

I do have the cigarette lighter set up for CTEK and have used it but I prefer the direct connection to battery.

I have had no problems with battery vapor. In fact my original battery is over 10 years old now and I started using a battery tender in about the 3rd or 4th year of ownership of Corvette that I ordered from factory.

That's a good idea on using a microfiber in between the hood and cord. I will have to try that but have had no problems so far.

The only thing I do notice is that sometimes the CTEK battery tender gets hot.

I keep the battery tender connected full time when corvette its not in use, under a tight fit corvette cover, hood closed and in the garage, no problem ever. I have the same set up LS WON, cable coming from the battery thru the front grill.

I use the magnetic connection in the front grill, not connected directly to the battery either, connected to the fuse box and the ground. Leave mine connected all the time with hood closed for years. Plus with the magnetic connection you just back out and it disconnects
