Big Hp guys, what tranny/diff did you go with?

So the car is down for the winter getting ready for the new motor, turbos, and fuel system. Now I'm trying to do my homework on how I'm going to get it to the ground reliably. Initially I was thinking a tr6060/c6z diff setup. But by the time I do that and get a clutch and everything else, it puts my into powerglide price territory. I'm 90% sure I'll be going with a glide but wanted to hear everybody's experiences with powerglides, th400s, 4l80s, and even tr6060s. Thanks in advance!

I was fine on OEM T56 for years with 800rwhp.....broke several diffs and torque tubes though. Recently added a ton of power and switched over to the TR6060 ZR1 spec, and a 2013 C6 Z06 diff. Hoping to run some clean single digits with the setup. Also added aftermarket diff and trans coolers for longevity.

I have over 1000 HP and use RPM 4L60 Level X. Now I don't just dump it but still average 1.35-1.40 in 0-60. I get about 1-2 years out of it before I have them refresh.

I'm going to over 1300 HP soon and will use same set up.....about 1000-1100 at RW.

another vote for the RPM 4l60 I have a level 7 that has been holding up just fine.

I don't track the car often which is likely why it's lived a long and happy life (about 15k hard street miles, about 20 passes or so) and even with drag radials this tranny is holding up great.

I have a TR6060 and C6Z diff, but would rather be auto. I broke the t56 and c5 diff enough that I'm scared to launch it now.

BLOWNBLUEZ06@RKT Performance 12-01-2015 10:49 AM

I had great luck with even a stock TR6060 and C6Z, making over 1kwhp and beating the crap out of it for quite a long time before building a ZR1 trans and Quaife diff.

A good friend of mine has a 08 C6Z package for a C5 if you're interested. He's got it for sale in the parts section for a very reasonable price. Let me know if you can't find it and I'll dig it up.

If you want an auto, there's an awesome deal on a fully built 4L80 with all the goodies in the C6 Parts for sale section. WhiteShark is selling it.

To the guys with the built 4l60s, how many passes would you guess you're getting out of them before they need to be freshened up? I guess I should have noted in the first post that I plan on doing ALOT of dig racing. I would like so see 5.5X ets out of these turbos if I can break 1kwhp with them.

To blownblueZ06, thanks for the heads up. I'll check out those ads. Also, what kind of track results are you getting with the tr6060?

zr1 tr6060 with a c6z diff here. i have about 15-20k of hard miles on the setup still works great, could probably use a refresh since i started having some issues hitting 2nd at the track but I'm sure it would last quite awhile the way it sits. trans is bone stock, bought it new from the dealer.

Upgrade that 1-2 syncro to carbon and you problems will be solved.

A member here has the C6Z trans and C6Z diff and an RXT clutch. He's at 920 to the tire. He drives it on the street quite a bit and has a lot of passes this year... Many in the 9s at 150+ with a best of 9.55@152

I opted for the TH400 vs PG because I like the gearing. It requires cutting the tunnel. It's not difficult, but that's not for everybody. I have a TH400 with C6 base diff with 4.10s. My car is a track only car and doesn't make near the power you guys are making - yet... I plan to spray it next year though.

If I had a street car making big power, I'd go the C6Z trans/diff route and enjoy it.

If you're looking to go 5.50 at the track, you'll likely want the auto trans...

Good luck with your goals

yea, plan is to send it in for a couple upgrades and a refresh but I'm in no rush. the only time i notice it is going to the track... and I'm lucky to do that 1 time a year at this point with my schedule. think i may wait till next winter to do it, i have enough small projects to do with the car and don't feel like pulling the trans just yet lol.

I've got a 4L80e in mine and I LOVE it. Great street manors and is about as simple as you can get at the track. I'm by no means leaning on the car and still in the 9.30's on its current street tune and full exhaust. Car also weighs 3700 with me in it.

Downsides....the cost of a 4L80e swap is higher than any other swap, and its a bit heavier than any other swap.

Below is basic info and you can check out the car run on my youtube link.

At 800-1000rwhp, I've been running RPM's 4L60 Level 7 and average about 50 1/4 mile passes before losing the 3/4 clutch from warped discs. This year I added the Sonnax drum that basically makes it Level X. This eliminates the warped discs, or is supposed to anyway. So far it's holding good but we'll see if it gets thru another season. My diff is a C5Z with Quaife internals and diff brace. It's been solid and no issues for a good 6 years.

For a 1/4 mile car, if I could afford a glide I would do it. I think the long 1st gear would help the turbo car alot, because unless track conditions are perfect I usually pedal the 1-2 shift to keep from roasting the tires.

I see Shoaf running 8's with his glide setup. That's what you're looking for with a 5.5 1/8.

Shoaf, 4drush, and the death vette were the ones that sold me on the glide. I was lucky enough to see the death vette at the track and also on the street when it was still in Albuquerque.

Capthuff, what was the pricing like on the th400 setup compared to the ECS

C5 Pete 12-05-2015 09:00 AM

I picked up my TH400 conversion used in a swap with a friend for my 4L60 setup.

I believe there is only one place for the TH400 conversion now - RPM. And it's crazy expensive.

To give you an idea, the TT and propshaft need to be shortened 3.5". That's why the tunnel needs to be cut, as it moves the bell housing for the converter forward.

Well, I just found out that ECS no longer does their PG kit. ****. Now that only leaves RPM (which is $$$$$).
