VIN stamped on block in 1966?

The 327 in my 66 has the partial VIN stamped on the pad along with the engine identification (FII23HE). I didn't think Chevrolet started this until 1968. The Vet was built in Dec 66.
I found an old 66 300 hp 327 (F020IHCH) in my storage area and it does not have the VIN on it. Heads and block built Jan 26, 1966.

Any one know if the VIN was added by Chevy just for Vets?

The practice of including a partial vin derivative on the engine stamp pad varied by assembly plant. In the case of St Louis where the Corvette was built, they started including a partial vin derivative in mid 1960 production on the engine pad.

Starting around January 1, 1968, Federal law required all cars to have the VIN derivative stamped on the block. Prior to that it was at the discretion of the automakers.

As rsinor pointed out, Chevrolet started adding the VIN derivative to all Corvettes, during the 60 model year. Generally, prior to 1968 the only other Chevrolet engines that got a VIN derivative, were the higher horsepower V-8's. Usually anything over 300 horsepower, going in a full size Chevrolet, Chevelle or Chevy II.

Makes me feel better. Thanks for the help.
