Sanding on my CCW wheels.... Why not.... haha

Everyone:

I decided to sand my CCW's wheels smooth. I wanted to remove all the forging lines that were originally left after they were created. I wanted them to be as much of a mirror as I could get.

Just because I'm very OCD.... I got it bad... :D

They are 8 years old now and needed a polish anyway. Its been a few months.... :D

To remove the forging lines I used 320 grit in some places, but the 600 grit worked well for most of the rough spots. Then I sanded these locations with 1000, then 1500, then 2000, then 3000, then Adams Metal Polish #1 and then #2.

The already smooth spots I just sanded with 2000 grit, then 3000 and then Adams Metal Polish #1 and then #2. Sanding with 2000 grit ensured that I got all scratches off that I did not notice.

I also ONLY use Webril cotton wipes to polish, as any other cloth WILL scratch the Aluminum as your polishing.

Now I just need to do that other 3 wheels.:lol:

Enjoy !

3 More wheels to go....

Toque

I just wanted to be more clear on what I'm trying to correct on my wheels.
These imperfection's have been on the wheels since I got them new 8 yrs ago.

Last night I pulled my front passenger wheel. This wheel has not been polished in months.

You can see the forging bumps on the sides of the 5 spokes.

I started sanding this wheel last night. I have not polished it yet though. The below is me sanding with 320 grit.... getting rid of all the imperfections in the wheel. I sanded he entire wheel to 3000 grit last night and plan to polish it tonight. Took me about 3 hours to fully sand the wheel.

Here is the stack of sand paper to prove it... :D

Thanks !
1 wheel was about 4 hours.
I think I may be able to shave that down a bit once I start my second wheel. Since I learned a lot on he first one.

Ive heard a lot of glowing reviews about adams polish, still haven't tried it yet

No sure how much I'm looking forward to doing the other 3 wheels, but It will be worth it in the end.

that is a NICE looking wheel !!!!!!! (do I say NICE too much)

CQRT 01-18-2016 12:56 PM

I restored a set of the YJ8 aluminum wheels for my `73 coupe and probably spent 4 hours on each wheel taking out the chips and polishing the wheel---but my work pales in comparison to what the OP has done.

Just amazing work!

williame3590 01-18-2016 12:58 PM

Put on some tunes and crank em up! It's simply a labour of love. Nothing more rewarding then a job well done by you with no help from others.
