Interior work
I'm about to start some interior work. Just ordered custom 3 point seat belts from Seatbelt Planet and scored new seat covers this week from a CF member. I searched the CF and found we have a couple of guys who are willing to loan the seat tools and the DVD. I have one estimate to install the covers ($400-$600) and will get a second before I decide, but I think I know where I'm going. As I move forward on this seat matter, I'll contact the tool guys if necessary.
Of those who have done their seats, who has replaced the foam along with the new covers? My seats are not sagging/mashed/crumbling etc, so I tend to think the foam is reusable, but may be wrong. :cheers: Dennis |
Dennis, I replaced the seat covers in my '66 about 12 yrs ago and also the foam at the same time. The foam was shot so I had no choice and both are still in excellent condition today. You will probably need to remove the old covers to see what the foam really looks like before deciding to re-use or buy new. I had a shop in Denver do mine and paid about $125 per seat, so it was worth it, and they did a great job and had them done in a week.

I replaced the foam and burlap when I did the seats in my ’67 and everything came from Al Knoch. My seats were original and pretty much toast so I didn’t have much choice. I’ve read the complaints about new foam making the seating position higher and it’s true to some extent. Just remember your old seats were most likely sagging. I got used to it very quickly.
I really liked the AK covers coming with the wire inserts and hooks (installation kit) already installed. The AK foam seemed a bit thick and I had to stretch and pull the covers to get the fit right. But, I think the foam filled the covers perfectly and I had no wrinkles. I also liked the fullness and the “definition” I got with the finished product. So my recommendation would be to go all new. My 'vote' is to get foams. I have done countless seats and new foams are a part of the job....because I do not have time to try to pack the seat with the batting material to take up the bagginess that can occur.

Hi dennis, I hjad mine done by a local guy....charged $250.00 for the pair. In my case the original foam was fine according to him. The seats were definitely old and well worn with lots of splits etc. So it just depends....Iv'e driven mine for nine years now and they are still good! see ya Chuck

Just did mine al Knoch foam and new leather covers.
They said with new covers you should get the foam also and center cushion to match. If you want them tight and right. |
