is/was there a factory oval port bbc aluminum intake?
looking for a factory (winters foundry) aluminum intake
oval port - either spread or square what would it have been used on and/or part number? i don't want aftermarket intake and i'm not crazy about using the rect port L72 style intake on oval port heads - unless someone can convince me that it works without issue cheers |
I'm sure there was one in 68 or 69

a quick ebay search showed the 68-69 390hp 427 engines were oval port, aluminum q-jet intakes.
so thats the ticket |
There are three that I know of Part #3919849 #3937793 #3947801

Yep, 68-69 ONLY, and yes, they were all Q-jet.
There was a time when they could be had dirt cheap----------------------and now you can't hardly buy one! |
FWIW - From reports I've heard more than once, the rectangular port L72 manifold works very well bolted to the oval port heads.

ALSO the 400 hp tri-power intake was oval port. |

68/69 aluminum intakes are Q-jet low rise. 66/67 are cast iron, but high rise like 66/67 square port aluminum. I have an L-72 intake and carburetor on pocket ported 390 heads with no issues. I wanted the L-72 look. It runs much better than the 390 intake and carburetor.

The 69s I have seen have cast iron, maybe the early ones had aluminum?

For many years (old wives tale I presume) it was emphatically stated that a rectangle port (some of you call it square port) intake would not work well on oval port heads because of the flow reversion effect which occurs. I don't know so much about on Corvette engines, but in the BB Chevelle world (which I am heavily into), MANY of the guys have run rectangular port intakes on oval port heads with excellent success. Additionally, one of my Chevelle friends contoured the roof of his oval port heads (NO, I didn't think to take a picture) so that it more closely mated to the rectangular port intake and he said it seemed to help. Also, there is a LOT more room for a tall manifold under the hood of a Chevelle than under the hood of a Vette. And, to intentionally piss off everyone here, in my opinion a BB Chevelle is much cooler than a Vette any day (well, except for a 57 Airbox car). |

Over the years we've worked with a number of the alum oval intakes from the Vette.
The part number above is correct, 3947801. They are a "Winters" casting, you can see the snowflake in the photo below. Thanks, Gary in N.Y. P.S. On the right platform, a 100% stock-appearing build, they are capable of handling 500/525 HP with no porting. Here's 2 shots, one of the top and one of the bottom. |

Absolutely works without issue. You can't run the oval port manifold on square port heads but you can run the square port intake on oval port heads. Just use the square port intake gaskets. I did this years ago.
