Help with a unusual barn find
 

Hello,

I'm new to the Corvette world and have purchased a 1971 convertible that has been in a barn since around 1972. So this will be the first of many questions.

Paint code is 984 but the car is Red? I see no signs of it having been painted as the mileage is extremely low and can find no yellow anywhere.

984 is Safari Yellow.

984 is Daytona Yellow and was only available in '69 and '70.

It sounds like you've come upon an interesting car.
Many folks would be very eager to read about it and see some pictures of it.
The color…. while it's CERTAINLY possible that the trim tag code didn't match the car's color when it left St.Louis, it really not very LIKELY.
If the car is indeed quite untouched from about 1972, or so, please be very careful what you do to it and with it until you're certain just what you have!!!

why was the car parked so early?

I promise more detail soon. It was a special deal with GM and used for one purpose.

Your trim tag picture doesn't tell us much because of the angle and the inability to read much on it. Yet it tells me a lot, because there is red paint on the tag. There has been post-assembly-line paint work done to the car. The tags had no paint on them from the factory.

Yes sorry about the pic it was the best I could do as its close to the wall on the barn.

Am I seeing 00024 on the odometer?
If so, you should really get some informed advice about even moving the car at this point.
Right now I don't think you'd want to dismantle anything in order to settle the paint question.
That is what it is and you don't want to spoil something else just in order to know for sure right now.

I love reading about finds such as this. Especially when there seems to be something that GM did that was out of the norm that makes the car, in some way, different from the rest.
If you aren't already doing so, taking lots of pics as this recovery process progresses is a must. If not for you for us! Looking forward to reading and seeing more. :thumbs:

I SO want this to be an untouched 71 I didn't notice it!

That's not all. The speedo is also a 68 or 69 as it has the speed warming indicator option which was only available in 68/69. You can see the yellow needle all the way over to the 160 mph mark.

Add to that the trim tag is probably also 68-70 and this does not look like a 71 corvette to me.
